Streaming media

Here are some pictures using a UMPC in a local coffee store, I know it’s a cliché for some living near Seattle to go to a coffee store but for the record I was drinking tea. Why was I watching TV here and not at home? Well, I was primarily making sure that the scenario worked before we shouted it from the rooftops and I was testing out the new skin that SlingMedia created for origami devices. On top of that my wife wanted a Frappuccino® so I really couldn’t lose.

I can report that this does work and works well. Some people might wonder why you would want to watch video or TV on a small screen. I used to think that too, I mean, who wants to watch 24 on 2-inch phone display? Apparently lots of people do and once you have tried it, it isn’t that bad. Pump the screen up to 7 inches and you have a more than reasonable experience. It isn’t a premium, sit back on the couch, widescreen extravaganza but when you are on a bus, waiting for a bus, or waiting for anything else it is nice to have options. For example, I have used Orb to watch recorded Media Center shows on my phone while waiting at the airport (before UMPCs were allowed out in public).

Granted, there needs to be some improvements to make streaming video and audio a ubiquitous, simple experience but these changes are coming and if you are just a little bit determined you can do it now.

I'm glad the UMPC comes with a stand that is something I wish I had for my psp. It makes it easier to watch movies when you don't have to hold the device for the whole entire time.

Once more time you are trying to sell these devices as entertainment devices. What about work, what these devices can do for executives, developers, artists, etc? That's what I want to hear from you guys.

The UMPC is starting to look really good. In fact, I;ve thought of so many possibilities!

It may never be a PSP killer, but for a person who needs more PC apps than hardcore games, the UMPC would be just perfect for mainly work-related use, with the occasional video playback, designed-for-UMPC games (I'm sure there will be lots of game creators jumping onto the UMPC bandwagon, just as what happen on the PocketPC platform), and even as a digital storage for professional/amatuer photographers/videographers!

Looks interesting.

So.... what is the device being held in the background on the first shot? Some other mysterious Microsoft future product?!

this device will never be a psp killer becasue they are different markets.  The PSP only plays games well and that is it.  Any thing else it does like play movies and music is a sweet add on.  And surfing the internet on a PSP is slow and painful.

I think it's good that device is geared towards multiple groups by being a full fledged pc and will obviously have a place in business and with people who like to watch TV on the go.

I agree with the statement of who wants to watch 24 on small devices like the video Ipod.  I've had a couple discussions about it and still am not sure how people can sit through an hour of anything on a 2.5 inch screen.

Sounds good, I'll take your word for it for the video thing, but I'm wondering how you got our of the Starbucks without getting noticed with the UMPC.

Thanks for all the comments and questions, I will do my best to answer them.

A couple of people asked about compatibility for games and other streaming solutions. The operating system is Windows XP Tablet PC Edition so it is compatible with standard XP applications. Some games run better than others, most casual games such as those from PopCap and MSN are fine. As for Orb, the second photo is music being streamed from the Media Center PC in my den via Orb - so, yes, it does work!

My blog posts will mostly show what I use UMPC for so don't necessarily take it as the official Microsoft position - I do get some (limited) time off! Just know that we do read every comment and discuss what has been said so if you feel that something is not being addressed immediately, don't think it is being ignored.

As for the mysterious device - I have to tell you that it's a copy of Business Week! (We know how to have fun.) The picture is a bit blurry because I didn't want to use a flash and draw a lot attention - which is how I managed to get out of there.

@ ctitanic ... i think that the big sales are going to be made to kids who wanna game and play on these things. that's where all market research shows that disposable income is being spent. console wars are proof of this.

the functionability of origami will be missed on most users because, like desktop computers, most users don't know squat about technology.

personallly, i am thinking of buying one of these because i'm a photographer and i travel a lot. this will be a great way to store and manage photos, as well as email them on the road.

but don't expect microsoft to get all high and mighty about the wonders of the origami ... they're going after the bells and whistles approach because that's where the money is.
