History of Origami by Otto - Part 5

(As a preface to this post, I will start by apologizing for not keeping with replying to all of the interesting questions and comments posted.  Especially with the recent activity around the Origami project, I’m usually not done with work until very late at night or early morning.  While I haven’t had enough time to keep up with answering questions I really do appreciate the posts and look forward to reading them.)

To make a long story short, the "Haiku" concept model I finally had built generated a ton of interest.

The front portion of the display area was a piece of acrylic that was removable, and I made a number of screen shots of various scenarios to help convey what the experience would be with a real product.  This was Bill’s suggestion, and it really helped people imagine the possibilities in a much more tangible and concrete way.  The result was so realistic that many people first through that the pictures of the concept model with the screen shots was a working product.  If only!

Keeping track of the model was next to impossible – it would fly out of my office as soon as it got back from its latest round of demos.  We finally had more of the models produced to keep up with the demand and interest.  The concept had clearly captured peoples’ imagination.

The question everyone asked of course was when something like the “Haiku” concept would be available.  The short answer was not any time soon.

That answer of course begged the question: What could be built today that was along the lines of the “Haiku” concept, but used available technology?

Thanks for the bad news ;) People ahve high hopes for the Haiku model. Tooooo bad it's not going to apear any time soon. By the way- I think its the best UMPC model I've seen. Intel's is to rounded, Samsung's has  tooo much area around the sreen, and the asus model is simply not my type. Your Haiku is simply the best!

Hi, Otto. I saw your interview on Channel 9. It was very informative. I told about UMPC and I got everyone excited at work.

I was just wondering why you use some words from Japanese culture for your projects. Origami and Haiku are from Japan. I'm just curious as a Japanese guy... It's cool to see some Japanese culture blend with the concept of Microsoft products.

I think Otto is writing about a time that is quite a while in the past here.  The "Haiku" model was seen back in April (or earlier?) 2005, so I believe he is saying that at the time the short answer for its availability was "not any time soon," but that work was started on what would be coming out right now (Q1/Q2 2006).  So, while devices following the "Haiku" model are still probably a bit down the line, the starting point for the comment "not any time soon" was around 1 year ago and thus the milestone of availability is not as far away as some seem to be taking it by their comments here.
