I am lost...oh wait...

This is a true story.  Okay, all of my posts are true, but this one is particularly important to me because this was a real life use of the Origami where I did not set out to “try” anything in particular.

It’s Saturday, about 10 am, and I am in the mountains somewhere in the middle of Corsica.  I had left my hotel at about 8 and was heading for the coast.  I’m on a road trip, and if you can believe this, I don’t actually have a map.  Up until this point I had been using a Lonely Planet guide to navigate as I would look up and read about cool places and then drive towards them using the rough sketches in the book or road signs.  All of a sudden this system failed me.  I approached an intersection and none of the town names it showed me were a) where I wanted to go or b) names I could even find in the book.  So I made a decision based completely on the pavement/road quality and headed off hoping for the best.  I did not feel great about this and after a dozen switchbacks I started to doubt my decision and worry that I was off course.

All of a sudden however, I remembered that I had the UMPC in the bag beside me and it was loaded with Microsoft Auto Route.  Could these single lane roads in the middle of nowhere actually be on the map?  After a few clicks with my finger and a lot of zooming – oh my goodness they were!  I could easily see where I had come from, locate the crazy intersection with the useless signs and determine that I was on route.  This was a huge time (and stress) saver.  And now that I had the application open, I was even able to create a route to find the fastest way to my destination.

This was awesome, and I felt pretty good about not spending those 5 euros on a map after all. :)

Very cool and a great use of the UMPC. I'm hoping that the next version of Streets & Trips is much more touchscreen and GPS friendly as the 2006 version isn't exactly as easy to use as devices some as Tom Tom while on the road.

Out of interest - which UMPC do you have there, it looks like it's got a green translucent case?

I was also wondering what UMPC that you have. I hope that I will be able to acquire one of these machines before I travel to Europe to use in finding things. One question does Streets work in Europe, does it have those maps. Also does the Samsung have some sort of capability to support GPS and where can I get a reciever?

Thanks,
Max!

It looks like you are using Otto's fake prototype. The one from the Digital Kitchen video. Of course you are not though. Great to hear stories of the practical use of your UMPC. I can't wait to get my hands on one and write an article about it for the My Potential, Your Passion. series!

Thanks,
Andrew

BrikTrak: She's using a pre-production unit that we got from Amtek (maker of TabletKiosk, Smart Caddie, etc.). The case is a semi-transparent green that was made as a test sample.

Maxwelllove: She is using Microsoft AutoRoute, which is the European version of Streets and Trips. (http://www.microsoft.com/uk/homepc/autoroute/default.mspx) You can buy a version that comes with a GPS unit too (USB). There are also BlueTooth GPS modules that you could buy too.

dattani: AutoRoute doesn't need an Internet connection to show you maps and provide directions.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying their pre-production models.  But for use lowly consumers who want to purchase one right now how to we do that.  It seems you can pre-order everywhere but no one can tell you when they will be shipped.  I just want one.

statix: lol, the picture is kinda funny becasue I had to set my camera on a rock to take it.  I was definietly alone out there, but figure I would take a quick shot after I realized the story might make a fun blog post.

Hi, UMPC folks!  I have some more thoughts on how to use the UMPC.  Would be really cool if I could try them out.

I recently bought a Bluetooth GPS unit. I searched online and found that GPSNow and Clemsens had the best deals as they would package a GPS and Maps together for a deal. (I bought the GPS for my PDA.)

GPS Now is where I bought the iBlue GPS (it lasts 30 hours on one charge), and the iNavigation mapping software. GPSNow does eBay, and I got the package deal for about $20 less than if I'd bought it at their site. (The eBay auction was for free shipping.)

I advise caution when buying mapping software. I'm very pleased with iNav, but was initially favoring TomTom. The reason I slid away from TomTom was because TomTom only allows you to install on one device (such as a PDA), and I was in the process of switching PDAs, and I didn't want to have to go through support or pay any additional fees to get off the old PDA and on to the new.

Hope the plug for a non-Microsoft solution doesn't violate any rules!
