What not to do with your UMPC

About a week and a half ago Dustin dropped by to show me the latest tweak he had done to his Samsung Q1. Can’t say I’d recommend it.

The story he’s telling everyone is that a clock fell off of his shelf and landed on the screen, scraping away 2 small pieces of the outer surface. A couple of tugs on those small protruding edges and he created that nice triangle effect above.

Here’s a shot giving a better idea of the thickness of the outer layer.

So what do you do with a device that has a broken screen? Well, I’d recommend that you contact Samsung and figure out how to get the screen replaced, but I thought I’d take the opportunity to dig a little deeper.

Here’s a shot with the back cover off and hard drive removed.

And here’s one with it pretty much fully disassembled.

To round out the photos, here’s another shot of the damaged screen.

That’s all for now, but I do have some photos of an extended battery we got in a week or so ago and I’ll get those posted up early next week. Oh, and fwiw, I no longer need to take my power cord home at night (extended + standard = lots of battery life!). :)

Until then, watch out for falling clocks!

The pictures, they frighten me.  *shivers, rubs forearms*  I'm still nervous about damaging the touchscreen layer on mine, and those gaping tears are nightmarish.

Nice to see the interior details though.

When you make it 5 years at Microsoft, you get a clock with your name on it. It's fairly small in size, but has some weight, and it's metal, with sharp corners. It supposedly dropped from a couple feet above the screen. Here's a pic of what it looks like: http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/2004/06/29/shanghai-clock-five.year.jpg
