Download Origami Experience and passing of the torch

Hi all, I'm happy to announce that Origami Experience has been published to the download center for UMPC users who install or upgrade to Windows Vista. If you don't know what Origami Experience is, read some of the previous blogs and check out the video demo we have.

So, when you are all ready, click on the link below to download the Origami Experience Pack. It includes Origami Experience, Sudoku, and Windows Vista Touch Settings.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AC349E84-C109-4AE7-A973-411C1DE2457F&displaylang=en

Note that DialKeys is not included in the download version. DialKeys is only available pre-installed on new UMPCs so if you wipe your UMPC or upgrade to Windows Vista, DialKeys will be unavailable.

Keep an eye out on the Download Center (http://microsoft.com/downloads) for the international versions of the Origami Experience Pack later this week. Ink Desktop and Experience Pack for Windows Vista will be published this week as well.

Finally, MS Reader - Optimized for Origami will go live later in February. I was personally amazed at how great of a reading device UMPCs really became once a good software implementation was created.

On a completely seperate note, I wanted to formally announce that my entire team and I (with the exception of Jeremy) have been asked to move off of UMPC and go to work on a new secret project. The new Product Unit Manager (PUM) for UMPC at Microsoft will be Oscar Koenders. Moving forward you can expect to see some new faces from Microsoft blogging and responding to forum posts, but I'm sure Sears, Emily, myself and the rest of the team will still be checking in from time to time.

Launching this site has been a lot of fun for me. I had the vision to create a community site for UMPC enthusiasts and new users alike to meet other people and to have a direct communication with the software engineering team as Microsoft. The team and I have learned a ton from running this site and have really enjoyed all the interaction that we've been able to have with all the members, which continues to grow daily. We average around 80,000 site visits a day and it's been our pleasure to listen, help and educate you all on UMPC and the Microsoft vision for small form factor computing.

Thanks,

Dustin

Hey Dustin

Thanks for all the info, looks like everyone will be keeping an eye out on the software over the next few months!

I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say good luck to you and the rest of the team on your new project. Though I haven’t been around that much I’ve enjoyed reading the Team Blog and the posts made in the forum and will continue to visit the site to see how the umpc platform evolves.

All the best :)

Best wishes on the new project and thanks to everyone on the Origami team for the effort and work; getting a new platform and a new "experience" off the ground isn't easy but you all did just that. Kudos!

Dustin,
Thanks for the link and the good word.

A secret project?  The words of Jack Nicholson as the Joker come to mind: "Where does he get all those toys?"

We look forward to hearing from you and the team.  Thanks for keeping us company.

mikeyaz, because Dialkeys is a licensed application from Fortune Fountain, we only have redistribution rights through the OEM channel. I believe Fortune Fountain is investigating a way for XP users that had Dialkeys pre-installed and don't wipe the drive to get it working under Windows Vista. People will probably need to ping them directly though.

This is a great improvement over the program launcher.
I've been running Vista on my Asus R2H for about 1 month now and are blown away by the possibllities. I see a great future for origami!

One question, If i choose to show the input panel on the taskbar it disappears from the side of my screen. Is it possible to use both options?

Justin-in: Yes, if you go into the Input Panel Options -> Opening tab, you can choose the 3 options of where the icon shows. If you want the tab on the side of the screen, be sure to check "Show the Input Panel tab".

About Dustin

I've been at Microsoft for 9 years and I interned here for 3 years in college, so basically I've been around for a while. My technical background is in application development, web development, database design and to a lesser extent networking. I've been managing teams at Microsoft for over 8 years now in various capacities. I love software, technology, marketing and business so I tend to dabble in a lot of areas. In my spare time I hang out with my awesome wife and two young boys. When I'm not golfing that is :)
