Origami Team Blog

A quick introduction

Before I tell you a little bit about our plans and myself, I’d like to start by thanking Dustin and his team for the fantastic  job they did on Origami Experience 1.0 for UMPCs. Their product offers truly unprecedented ease of use and just looks great. The team set the bar for future versions. We have decided to increase our efforts to unlock the potential of Ultra Mobile PCs by putting an even larger team in place. Jeremy who you all know, will introduce his new team shortly.

As for myself, I have joined Microsoft after working for Toshiba running Notebook Product Planning and Marketing for more than 12 years. The last desktop I used was a 386 and I have no intention to go back any day soon. I am very excited to work on the Origami Experience and some other things about which we’ll talk later. I also like to invite you to let us know your feedback on version 1.0 and tell us what you want for version 2. We already have some very cool ideas but can always use some more.

Well, first of all I would like to thanks Microsoft for not letting us down! It's nice to see that.

Secondly... that's what I would like to see from Microsoft now, more presure over the OEMs to have Vista drivers released. And more tips about how to tweak our UMPC to get the most we can out of them using Vista.

Oh and I forgot to mention more efficient drivers for our UMPC including HID Drivers. I know that that's OEM responsibility but I have seem many 3rd parties drivers in my life and if somebody can make them that's Microsoft.

Probably my biggest want would be to see development on Softsled (software base Media Center Extender). With Vista having Media Center built in, I would really like to be able to stream recorded TV to my UMPC. It seems like that would be a perfect fit for this device. I personally prefer the Vista Media Center interface to manage and play my media over OE since the buttons on the Q1 allow you to navigate Media Center using just the hardware buttons --- it works pretty much like my Zune.

There's many thing I'd like to see and I'm sure there will be a Wishlist thread popping up soon.
Here's some.
- On my Q1 the volume buttons only change the OX's volume control and not the master.  The volume increments are pretty huge as well.  Would like the hardware buttons to control the master.
- Add urge.com playlists to the playlist.
- Add a way to view the Now Playing playlist
- Add a way to easily rate music with the star system.
- Make it easier to add programs to the Program launcher instead of giving just a browse button.
- Add a way to set tags for videos & pictures.
- Add an API or open something up to be able to use the OX interface with 3rd party apps.  An example would be able to embed navigation software like iGuidance into the OX interface.  So you can still have access to the music controls but use the navigation software at the same time.
- Replace the ugly Favorites icon.
- Add visualizations for music

After entertainment the main focus of version 1 I think for version 2 communications would be a nice focus: The same way the v1 made entertainment touch friendly it would be great if you van chat/voip/mail etc using your finger. I feal a laptop on my lap a bit bulky when I chat, the external webcam doesn't really help either. A lot op umpc are now comming with internal webcam.

Imagine this scenario: I get a mail from a friend. I see a notifaction poping up while I'm watching a movie (i set the OE to let it to interupt for this). I pause the movie and read it, it is a question for some document. I see she is online so I open a chat session with image. She doesn't accept voice because she is in a library, so I have to use the integrated keyboard or use ink. while I have the chat window open i browse my files on my (home) server and drag the file with my vinger in the chat window. We chat a bit more and after closing I can resume my paused movie.

Not really that exiting, but i think it is a usefull scenario. The great plus over laptops is the toutch interface. The plus over some new smartphones is the larger storage and the larger screen (and possibly the webcam).

This is allready possible with current applications, but I think these can be optimized for umpc.

The same goes for IE. This can also be optimized, for example a touch way of zooming and scrolling the site with a vinger (pinching a site is also great, but we don't want to look like copycats and is not that necessary :-).
