Origami Team Blog

Introduction from a team member, and a request

Hello all you UMPCers out there.

I am a tester (SDET to be precise) on the Origami Experience (OX) team. I am new to the team for version 2, but have worked at Microsoft for 7 years, including stints in PocketPC/Smartphone land when in its infancy, and recently on Windows Vista on the Mobile PC team (where I am currently working on OX).

Just wanted to introduce myself, and get a request out to all of you to ask for your participation in our forum poll. The poll is asking how you use your UMPC, and Origami Experience in particular. We want to make this the killer device we envision it as being, and we would like your help to do that.

Even if you aren't using it that much, or at all, please let us know why, and if there is anything we can do to change that. We want to focus the majority of our energies in the right area, so please do let us know by taking the poll, and if you want to tell us something about your usage or experience, post a response in the forum and let us know. Good, Bad or Indifferent, we want to hear from you.

Thanks in advance.

Why ami  not using it? Because i dont have the money. its $1000 for a decent one, and even if i did have that much, i would but a laptop. I am really after the ASUS R2H or the Q2. What can you do to help? Maybe send me one? lol. thats too easy. How about another one of them contests? ;)

I love my Q1 and would recommend it to anyone instantly, but the only thing that troubles me abit is the fact that origami experience was only released for vista... leaves those of us that trusted in the project in its early stages kind of disappointed....

Good luck with your testing! It mube be a lot of fun to test for the OX team ;-)

I'm due to get a Q1 tomorrow, and I too am troubled by how the Origami Experience pack is vista only.

I could clone it myself if I had the time, but it would lack a lot (read:all) of the special effects/transitions.

i'm a photographer and i've been watching umpc development since the Q1 was first released.

i can see the improvements, but i can also see the technology moving in the wrong direction for people like me.

firstly, price is high for a device like this. i can spend similar money and get an xnote lm25 which isn't much bigger, and is a fully fledged laptop. for less than half i can get an epsom storage device (with monitor and massive hard drive) which is perfect for my needs ...

second is that some umpcs don't have CF slots built in. perhaps i'm not the main demographic, but without a CF card slot i'm simply not interested.

third problem is OS limitations. if microsoft are serious about this kind of technology, they need to reverse gear a vista build that is light and fast for this kind of system. such a vista build could also be used for numerous other applications, where a massive OS just isn't suitable.

i'm intrigued by umpcs and i think samsung is moving in the right direction ... but given 3 choices (small laptop, umpc, portable storage device) then the umpc is the bottom of the three choices.

microsoft's own goal is to get these things down to a $500 price tag. i think they're a looooooong way off doing it!

I have a Q1p, and the main reason I don't use Origami experience is that it doesn't work in portrait mode.

I would blow away on MS' multi touch version surface. Maybe a multi touch enabled UMPC?

A lighter version of Vista. Or a 'scaleable' version of Vista. Say features of vista could be added or dropped when connected to the Vista installation CD.

I know price is not completely under your control, but id like a  $600 is where i find.

Also, I would like Microsoft to push promotions and awareness for the UMPC. The "UMPC" is too geek for that, maybe a name change there.

I would like mobile operators offering the UMPC . That would also subsidize the price and bring the UMPC to the masses.

Better search/ gesture interface. With the size limitation the UMPC cannot be using.

Games is something i always wanted on the UMPC. A Smaller form factor . A PSP like platform.

Car Integration. I would like an IR Remote and an exclusive dock for the UMPC.

Integrated DVB TV tuner. Carrying something as huge as a UMPC(UMPC is still quite huge) i would like to see TV on it too. Japanese CE manufactures are squeezing DVB into practically anything, i see no reason why the UMPC manufactures arent doing it.

Overall, i feel the UMPC is confused device. Neither does it want to get popular and take it to the PDA/ Pocket PC market, nor does it appeal to the Niche market.

I just received my Samsung Q1 Ultra. I went through the Vista startup process, finished it and then got the BSOD. It then booted into the Samsung recovery Solution 11 screen and is (I think) reloading the device to default....  I sure hope it does not do this with each BSOD and I hope to not see another BSOD. I'll post later if I can get into the system and give my usability opinions.

Sorry about my last post, the devide did BSOD with the first vista load but now that I read the screen it rebooted into it is NOT restoring the OS but is takeing its first backup to create a recovery point for future diasters to enable the device to get back to default later if recovery is needed (I think).

Bought an Asus R2HV UMPC today to finally be able to participate in the UMPC experience - and so far I have been pretty disappointed at my OBO experience - which sucked.

My UMPC does not come standard with a keyboard - and I thought that shouldn't be a problem - but it was.

I got a preinstalled version of Windows Vista on the hard disk drive that required me to provide input and answer questions to configure Vista - but at this time the stylus wasn't activated and my newbie fingers on the foreign controls had great difficulty selecting options on the screen and working my way through the installation options.

My first major problem was accidentally choosing Spanish on the first screen giving me a list of languages, being told that my choice was irrevocable and not being allowed to back out of it. Luckily powering the unit off allowed me get the original language configuration screen back and with great difficulty I was able to choose English and continue with the installation.

That was up until the point where I was being asked to specify a username and realized that it was physically impossible for me to do so with the limited input devices available to me ... at which point I rushed out to Best Buy and bought a PS/2 to USB converter device that allowed me to use an old keyboard and mouse on the machine and finish the installation - something that I wouldn't have been able to do without a mouse and keyboard.

At the very least all UMPC devices should have a big sticker on the outside of the box - stating that a USB keyboard (if the device does not include one) is required to install.

At the very best, the configuration options should be much simpler and should be targetted at UMPC devices with limited input options that the OS is being shipped on. Either that or you need to mandate that all UMPC devices come with a keyboard, just so the device can be configured correctly when it is powered up for the first time.

I'm fairly computer literate - and I can't imagine anyone who isn't - being able to configure the Asus R2HV (or any similar UMPC machine).

And despite my less than stellar OBO experience - I still love the device and what I can do with it once I've properly configured it.

More updates on my experiences and projects will be coming later - UMPC devices have so much potential - my dream computing device is based on a UMPC and I hope to be able to see it become real within 5 years.

I only recieved my Q1p a few months ago. I had never noticed the Oragami program until not too long ago. I like the interface for playint music. My complaints is creating playlists. I have all my muskc in folders that, essentially serve as playlists. each folder is, basically, a cd. It makes it easy if I want to listen to a particular cd/folder. I would like an interface where I could just drag a folder into a playlist and be done (or I just haven't figured it out yet). I am also not keen on it being defaulted to run at start up. My IE does that now on my desktop with xp and it angers me to no end because I can't get it to stop (but that's another rant). Other than that I have found the progrm to be enjoyable.  I am looking forward to playing around with it more to see what it can do
