    Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

    Hi!

I am planning on buying the R2Hv, but I find it somewhat tricky to figure out the exact specifications. I was thinking on buying the R2H a couple of month ago and I had the same problem then. Luckily I managed to find persons here on origamiproject.com who had bought the item and could give me first hand information.

The model that is available here is R2HV-BH019C. Has anyone bought this and, if so, what did you get? (And are you happy with it?)

    Thanks in advance!

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

From my poking around, here's what you get as an upgrade over the R2H:

    Pentium M 723 (1.0GHz ULV)
    1280MB DDR2 (256MB onboard, 1024MB SODIMM)
    80GB 4200rpm HDD
    Vista Home Premium

All the other specs are identical - 7" 800x480 WVGA screen, two cameras, GPS, fingerprint reader.

That one snuck out under the radar - I hadn't even heard of it until now. It's finally worth buying.

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

Thanks! That part of the description looks the same as what I have found. (However, somewhere I found a specification saying that it didn't have a GPS, but that must be wrong.)

What I am really uncertain about is what comes with it, like for example the battery. Some sources say it comes with a two cell battery and some other say it comes with a four cell. I am also unsure about the other extras that might come with it (keyword, DVD burner, etc.).

I also just noticed it by the way. I was actually looking for the best price for the R2H when I stumbled upon it. I really like it though.

That's great! I'm really curious now. Hopefully you will get it soon (so I can order my own after you have praised it ;) ).

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

I should have called the Credit Card company ahead of time. They said this was out of my spending habits and blocked the transaction. My order status says:
    Order Received/Pending Credit Verification

Hopfully I'll get it taken care of today.

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

I'm curious to see how well the battery life of the P-M version stacks up to the Celeron-M version. It had an impact on the battery life of the Q1.

Definitly let us know when one of you manages to get one of these. It is a lot more expensive for only a some extra power. I own the R2H and that has never bothered me with its (lack of) speed. Other issues are much more pressing.

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

My order has been shipped due to arrive Thursday.

Is the R2HV worth the extra money? I don't really know I've never owned an umpc before and thought of it this way.
    • The chances of me buying another are slim and none.
    • If I wanted to upgrade the ram on the older version it could cost a 100 bucks.
    • I'm also getting two batteries (2 and 4 cell) so power won't be a problem.
    • Second generation products are usually better than the first?
I'm not the type that buys the latest and greatest because you usually get screwed. I hope I made the right choice only time will tell. It would be nice to go to a store and play with a demo, but that's just not possible. So I can only base my choice on the opinion of others, forum members who have the device and web sites who get review products.

What other pressing issues are you talking about?

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

The first and most important issue for me is the native screen resolution. 800x480 is not enough for more then a little browsing. I use my R2H for taking notes in class and then I always bost the resolution to 1024x600. This distorts the image a little and I would much prefer to have a screen with that native resolution. Another screen issue is the paltry backlight. Almost unusable with even the slightest natural light fall on the screen and a heavy battery drain when the backlight is turned all the way up. This might have been adressed with the new P-M equipt R2H as has been done in newer Q1 builds (before the Q1 Ultra) but it is a serious issue with my R2H.

In the Netherlands none of the R2Hs hase been shipped with the 4 cell battery so I have to make do with just 2 hours of battery life. I can work with this as it last a little over a full class of taking notes but I need to find an outlet if I want to use those notes after that.

The WiFi signal is soo weak I cannot get a connection in my living room where I have never had a problem with any WiFi equipt device including PDA's. This is a high annoyance wih me and decreases the usefullness of the R2H for me.

I have now owned my R2H for almost a full year and I have gone through a few stages of owners delight with it. Ranging from annoyance to true delight I have come up wuth a litst of
requirements for my next UMPC (which means I believe in the future of this concept). 1024X600 resolution for the LCD is firmly placed on the number one spot on that list. Battery life of at least three hours in at number two. Retaining the screenwrite-ability (the strongest point of the R2H) is on number three.

The T83 looks very promising as long ASUS comes with a version with a higher screen resolution.

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

As a current UMPC user you have an advantage over me when comes to making a choice for a new device. I agree the the higher screen res would be better and it looks like the R2HV didn't change that. I thought about the Q1U but based on what I have read in these forums I don't think it would fit my needs.

Two of the main features that led me to purchase the R2H were the hardware buttons which would seem to offer better navigation than the Q1 and the fact that vectoring was not a problem. Having owned a R2H how well do these functions work?

I hope that maybe with the new P-M platform they have addressed the issues with the WiFi connections.

Those two features are both very strong ones for the R2H. Like I said in my previous post I use my R2H often for taking notes and that would be very difficult to do on a machine like the Q1 because of the vectoring issues that has. The R2H has next to no vectoring problems unless you really push down hard with your palm. I also love the ease with which I can navigate through Windows with the mouse stub and the mouse buttons on the machine. It really is a joy. So much so even that I prefer using those to using the touch screen, either with my fingers or with the stylus. Using the mouse stub alone allows me to navigate and select what I want. I can even double klick on items with it.

So yes, if these are your reasons for buying the R2Hv then you have made a good choice. But I'm not as optemistic as you are about the WiFi problems. I suspect the range has been reduced out of power consumption considderations and it will be the same on the new version as it was on the old one.

I just wanted to say that I have ordered one too now. Unfortunately they didn't have it in stock so I will have to wait for a while.

Mine left California on Friday morning by UPS, due to arrive Thursday. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will show up tomorrow.

Re: Has anyone bought the R2Hv?

It went out for delivery at 4 am, only a 15 min drive from me and I have to drive 6O miles in the other direction to go to work. It's going to be along day :(

My next post should be on my new UMPC instead of my PPC
