Re: Asus R2H with Vista rtm

    hi together..

i'm going crazy. is it really true that asus has no vista drivers for the R2H at the moment?
i've installed my vista business on it. the installation worked well except the wlan istn't found, the cam, the fingerprint and the gps. :(
is there a way to get these things to work?
by the way sorry for my bad english. ;)

    cheers

Re: Asus R2H with Vista rtm

Using one of the discs that came with the R2H, I got the fingerprint reader and Asus security software working.  Available resolution emulations change with each reboot, but the lower left button does run the Setting Center. I don't think changing the brightness worked from there, but I'll have to verify that the next time I want to boot Vista (or accidentally boot it).  The wireless button also works, but since Vista loses my WiFi (it rarely shows up in Device Manager), only Bluetooth options show up with any regularity.

Re: Asus R2H with Vista rtm

Run SETUPIAM.exe from FPRINTS folder on your ASUS driver DVD and this will install fingerprint driver and Asus Security Protect Manager software.

Re: Asus R2H with Vista rtm

    thanks for that hint.
wich drivers from the orig asus dvd does work under vista?
what is your best installation for all the hardware?
btw. after installing the FPRINTS ASUS driver from the DVD and Asus Security Protect Manager software the r2h didn't start. i have a black screen after the bootscreen.

sorry for all my newbie questions. ;)

Re: Asus R2H with Vista rtm

I also wasn't able to get the ASUS Security Protect Manager to work - same problem - a black screen after the bootscreen. I started Vista in safe mode and used system recovery to get rid of that problem.

One thing I'm currently really missing is an official word from ASUS, as we don't know if they will ever release drivers for the R2H.

On the Windows Vista Upgrade Program Page from ASUS I still don't see a delivery-date for the Vista Business Edition I ordered, so they may be working on something (hopefully)

There are several threads already about installing Vista on the R2H, you can use the search to find them. The CD/DVD that came with my R2H did not contain the latest drivers, so I downloaded them from the ASUS site.

When installing Vista make sure you get an internet connection working, Vista will search for drivers (including the fingerprint scanner, LAN, audio etc) on the driver website.

I had a problem getting the LAN to work, but by using the XP WLAN driver I could connect to the network and Vista downloaded a lot of additional drivers.

After that installing the security software from ASUS (latest downloaded version) the fingerprintscanner login is working, although not always when resuming from hibernate.

Your problem might be that you are searching for a german version, I use the English(us) version:

    Version V2.0.0.802.5 2006/08/30 update
    OS WinXP
    Description Fingerprint driver and utility
Fingerprint driver and utility for WINXP
    File Size 12.63 (MBytes)

(Hm, copy/paste from the ASUS website makes for large spacing)

I haven't received an answer to that question from ASUS, but the statement you got in the mail sounds like a definite answer.

I'm curious what's going to happen after the next 2 - 3 weeks - Maybe they will even start to ship Vista from the Upgrade Program Wink [;)]

I got the same answer, end of  February, when I contacted ASUS in the UK about drivers.

Re: Asus R2H with Vista rtm

www.microanvika.com here in the UK have been advertising a Vista R2H on there site for while now. I emailed them and got the following reply

    "Dave,

The new model is expected to arrive here during the course of next week.

It will come with Vista installed, so hopefully the driver issues you refer to will have been addressed."

Look like Microanvika (who typically get Asus firsts and new deals before others) are due to receive Asus R2H’s from Asus with Vista preinstalled. This retailer is also showing the XP Table edition R2H as discontinued (it is not clear if this means the retailer is discontinuing it, or if Asus have discontinued it.

To me this means that Asus must have done some pre-testing with Vista, and thus identified the issues with certain things not working i.e. buttons and LED’s ceasing to function, and as a result I would assume they have already re-wrote the drivers and Asus build apps so they work with Vista. If this is the case I would expect to see driver for Vista on the Asus support site in the coming weeks

    Hi,

Don't pay over the odds for this machine. You can pick one of these up from America for 600 quid including VAT and delivery. Granted, you don't get the accessories but are they worth 200 quid?

Re: Asus R2H with Vista rtm

The R2H is available in the UK for £735 (from free range PC).

factor in if you buy the American version you get the American map software which is about as usefull as a chocolate skateboard if you live in the UK. Autoroute 2007 that comes with the UK versions costs £45.

The Uk version also comes with a portable DVD Writer drive worth £75 (i.e. available from proportable in the US for $149) AND the foldable keyboard worth £30 (proportable again) AND dont forget the single capacity battery pack (the slim one) which I would estimate costs £40-50 when it becomes available to purchase as an accessory.

The UK version also comes with a USB digital TV Tuner £20+ I dont think the US version comes with this either.

Buying from the US also means you have a US plug and will need to by a US to UK plug adaptor. If a US R2H becomes faulty supporting it by warranty could be tricky as it may need to be repaired or sent to the US

Dont forget the extra shipment cost from the US to UK. All in all this totals around £210 which I think If the above items would be useful to you (and you dont have them) then I actually think the UK version is better value!
