Re: List of compatible Software
ctitanic:The only point where I see a problem is the Display. So my question still will the autoscaling be good enough to trick the installation requirement of 800x600?
It's not a "trick". When you hit the change resolution (aka auto-scale) button to go into 800x600, it's 800x600. Same as if you went into the Display properties and moved the slider over a notch to 800x600.

so basically, if I run any program or my own code querying the screen resolution it should return what ever I have selected there?
I know that you answered my question in private but would be good if you post about it here too, do you think that we are going to be able to use Visual Studio in these Oragamis?

Re: List of compatible Software
I did not notice that you have updated the FAQ with
What software is compatible with the UMPC?
In general, if a program runs on Windows XP, it will run on the UMPC as long as the device meets the program's minimum hardware requirements. The smaller screen size and resolution may cause some clipping on programs, but the units support increasing the resolution, which in most cases will solve the problem. Some manufacturers may include hardware buttons to give you quick access to different resolutions. Standard resolutions include, but are not limited to, 800x480, 800x600, and 1024x600.
So basically, that is an affirmative answer to my question about VS 2005!?

Processing power in the 1 GHz class, full x86 compatible architecture. Integrated graphics capabilities (DirectX 7, DirectX8 Level). You're not going to run Halo 2 on this generation.
DAMN IT!!!! Ohh well... time to crack out the Diablo II disks...

Yes, VS 2005 should install on the device if you're in at least 800x600. I just tried installing it in a Virtual PC image of XP running @ 800x480, and it shows a message saying I should switch to 800x600 before continuing. I changed the resolution, continued, and all appeared to be fine (note: I didn't complete setup, I canceled out after the wizard started).

Here are 2 screenshots of VS2005 at 800x600px resolution. Not that much usable!

Re: List of compatible Software
VS resizes the panes automatically, so you don't lose those areas in red. You just end up with less real estate in other visible parts of the UI.
I went ahead and let the install go and put VB.Net on there, changed to 800x600, turned on the same panes as in those screenshots, and IMHO, it's usable. Spent a few seconds resizing the panes to fit better on the screen. 800x480 is obviously more constrained, but still usable.

Re: List of compatible Software
You can also autohide most of the panes which would give you more space to code in.

Re: List of compatible Software
I'll add the programs that have been tested to my first post on this thread... that I think will help a lot.
What else you have tested in the real Origamis MS Origami Team?

Re: List of compatible Software
Hi everybody,
In my point of view, the Origami is not just a funny portable device. As long as it is a PC with 1 Ghz and 512 Mb RAM, I could use it when at home with a 17'' screen and a keyboard so that it could be my only computer (I'm missing a CD drive anyway). In that case it won't be a bad idea to support programs like Visual Studio or Photoshop to be used when at home.
Additionally, I'm interested in this device to use it to record music. It's incredibly small and portable, so it would be great to use it as a guitar effects processor or as a multitrack recorder by using certain apps, which actually fit the requirements of the Origami. But unfortunately it seems that I don't know if those apps will work on an Origami.
For me that's the main forward of the device: it provides full Windows XP functionality. If we depended on every application to have a version adapted to UMPC then what would be the advantages of supporting XP rather than using some kind of embedded software like PSPs do?

A lot. It'll take quite a bit of time/effort to get a list together, but we're looking into it. Maybe a blog post, a sticky forum post, and/or FAQ update. Stay tuned.

You are the MAN! That's what I'm talking about! A sticky forum post will do the job, little by little you can post one by one programs that have been tested, like I started doing in this one.
