    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Just upgraded mine. Took about 10 minutes (I was trying to be careful when taking the case apart). Here are the pics:

    Yes, Mazda_3s Great pics! Thanks

EDIT: Was there any seal broken that shows you've opened your unit? Or would they only be able to tell that the screws are worn?

    Thanks

Hugo just posted a DIY video for the ram upgrade:

Great video and it blows away another myth, this one started by Walt Mossburg, that the Q1U can take 2 to 4 mins to boot up. Hugo's boot up took about 20 seconds.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Pardon me for a dumb question, but what's the advantage of the RAM upgrade over ReadyBoost? Is the disk caching to a USB stick or a memory card just no substitute for real RAM performance? Because otherwise, I'd far rather use an SD card to upgrade a Q1 Ultra.

No comparison.  Go for the memory upgrade.  You don't lose out on your SD slot or have something sticking out of your UMPC.  That, and the access time for RAM is better than flash.  Finally, it will render your system overall more responsive.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Short version? No one's been able to demonstrate any significant improvement with ReadyBoost, while upping the device to 2GB means far less thrashing of the hard drive - which is important since the drive is only 4200 RPM and so is relatively slow.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

I have no doubt RAM upgrade is much better, but in my experience with only I GB RAM readyboost helped alot. logix has numbers that show it helps with 1GB (not with 2).See GBM forum

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Readyboost is useless after you have more than 1.5gb of physical system memory. Even in MS press releases and FAQs, readyboost was claimed to be helpful ONLY if you have around 1gb of memory. The more system memory you have, the less useful readyboost becomes. At 2gb and up, readyboost becomes worthles.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Well I upgraded my Q1U to 2GB today, and I can honestly say that I didn't notice much difference in the speed of the device. I had already applied all the system changes recommended, but startup still takes a while with a lot of disk thrashing (I have disabled readyboost, plus pre-fetch and superfetch), it seems to take a good 4-5 minutes to settle down. I'd be interested if anyone can suggest other things to speed it up. In regards to installing the RAM, here are a few things to be aware of: 1) Pushing the little clip on the side to open the case requires a little pressure, you need to push down and then to the side (watch you don't snap it). Then use the screwdriver to widen the opening. (Hugo made this bit seem easy, but I didn't find it like that). 2) It will take some force to open the case (as mentioned previously). You need to apply pressure all along the case. I found that it came away easier by starting on the left (not in the middle like Hugo says). 3) Be careful of the headphone socket as it juts into the case itself and you need to manouvre the case over it. 4) When putting the case back on be careful of the headphone socket again as you'll need to manouvre the case back over it. 5) The case will still feel a little loose once back on, but that will cease when you put the screws back in. 6) When you boot for the first time the device will sit on the BIOS screen for a bit (as it checks the RAM), then Windows will boot a little slowly (this improves on the next boot). If you are interested the memory I used was Kingston (KVR667D2S5/2G) which I got from Ebuyer (code 119498) in the UK. Talking about memory, I bought an OCZ 8GB SD Card (OCZSDHC4S-8GB) for my Q1U and it read it just fine (incase you are thinking of getting one). Ebuyer code is 127158.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

its easier to start opening the case from the left sides, and to pry the case apart from the bottom, not the side with the headphone jack

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

I have seen a massive difference since installing 2gb of ram.I think it should have been sold this way and reactions would have been more positive.
