    Fergus

My one came with Vista and I don’t want XP as Vista looks better for multimedia (basically I am tired of XP interface after 7 years), it is refreshing and future proof.

I do recommend 2Gb upgrade mostly because after hibernation the computer boots much quicker and despite HDD doing something for the first 7 minutes it does not impede the responsiveness, but it did before when was on 1GB.

Memory is relatively cheap in compare with the rest. I recommend this one: HERE (not fair – it is cheaper now by £10 damn!)
By the way both my cameras and everything works after 2Gb upgrade. Perhaps becuase I reinstalled Vista from scratch?

So go treat yourself, you will not regret it – unless your partner leaves you… Wink [;)]

I bought me a small good quality soldering iron and used an electronic multi-meter to check the wires. It is worthy to invest in this considering the cost of the Q1U and the result. Shorter wires – less signal loss and safer when you close the case.

    All

When opening the computer NEVER use the force. After you unscrew all screws (7) and unhook the little hook next to the VGA connector, press where the letters SD are (exactly above the (VOL-) button) and on the opposite side bellow to disengage the two hidden hooks there.

Then wiggle softly, move and twist (with feeling) until the back gets off. Note that the headphone socket is about the last to get out of the back when opening and the first to get in when closing.

Having the internal WWAN modem on Q1U cannot be compared to anything. I think this is because QU1 is a perfect size to hold in hands and it is light and not too hot. The screen has good resolution and altogether is a power-house!

    Hey cbodhi,

Does it take that speed of ram okay? I notice it comes with 400MHz ram and the one you point to is 667.

If it does, great... might speed the little thing up, although it's the CPU that seems to limit it.

Now, who knows how to replace the CPU? lol

This memory works very well in my Q1U. What better scientific proof do I need?

In other terms, it is backward compatible Smile [:)]

Just to echo the "be very careful" comments above.

I have just bricked by Q1U, well, it appears to be working but the screen is just bright grey.

    Be careful !

    :(

Re: Where to source a PCI Express Mini WWAM cellular modem card from?

Was just re-siting the WWLAN antena to nearer the edge of the case.

When I put it back together, the screen is now just bright grey - there is no display as such. It goes bright, less bright, off etc at the appropriate points during boot up and in response to battery/AC power. So assume something is just not connecting to the LCD.

    Hmmm.

Sounds like the connector (ribbon cable??) that connects to the display to the graphics chip/motherboard, might have become slightly (not fully) disconnected.

Re: Where to source a PCI Express Mini WWAM cellular modem card from?

Yes, the problem was that when the unit went back to Samsung for the new screen, they didn't put in the screw tht hold the upper circuit board to the case. So you end up lifting that up with the bottom part of the case unless you are very careful. I think I must have dislodged one of the cables from that (I think there are only 3 on the edge) to the lower circuit board (which I assume is the screen's stuff).

However despite pushing these back in, it still doesn't work.

Hello, I'm new here, so go easy on me guys Smile [:)]

I'm trying to find out where I can buy a Sierra MC8775 from for my Asus R2E.

It's got the PCI socket, Sim socket and Arial built in, just need the module.

I'm in the UK, if that makes any difference.

    Thanks Hazel

Thanks Mikey, didn't realise they were that expensive. Guess I'll stick to GRPS on the Mobile via BT.

What not butcher a Three USB Modem ? Then must have a mini-PCI inside.

Re: Where to source a PCI Express Mini WWAM cellular modem card from?

I got a UtStarcom UM150 today from Alltel (UM150AL) with great hopes that I could take out of it a mini pci express module for transplant into my OQO 02.  I took it apart; it does not contain a mini-pci express module.  Anyone know where I could get a mini-pci express module for Alltel, or a generic one compatible to any carrier, or generic firmware for the Novatel Expedite EV620 module that's in there?

Re: Where to source a PCI Express Mini WWAM cellular modem card from?

I picked up an AT&T USBConnect 881 and moved the card into my Samsung Q1 Ultra.

I installed the Sierra Wireless Watcher software and got it up and running as a USB device first.

Then I took it apart to find that it indeed has a Mini-PCIe card inside. There are four screws to take the USB dongle apart (one is under the SIM). You have to squeeze the case on the sides near the bottom part to get the hidden clips there to release. Then you can start to open the case with the top clips releasing last.

Inside the dongle I found that there are two parts to the antenna. One part is on the circuit board that the Mini-PCIe card plugs into. The other part is a U shared piece of copper that is stuck to the Mini-PCIe card using thick double-faced tape. The part taped to the card is connected to the AUX antenna port. There is a short cable that connects the PC Board to the Main Antenna port on the PC card. This setup gives the card antenna diversity with one antenna on each side of the card.

I removed the card and installed it into my Q1. I was able to leave the attached antenna on the card. The foam tape is pretty thick, so it was a little tough getting the case back on. I may replace the double-faced foam tape with thiner tape if this works out.

When I powered it up, the software recognized the card, but it could not find a signal. I shut it down and moved the cable from the AUX jack to the Main jack and put it all back together. I am able to get a signal with 3 bars out of five. That is about the same signal strength I had when it was in the dongle. I can connect to the Internet, but it only connects using EDGE instead of HSPA as it did in the dongle.

Has anyone else found they could only connect using EDGE when using a single antenna?

I'm at my office right now. I'll try it from my home to see if I can get a 3G connection where I have a stronger signal. If not, I'll have to start hunting for a pair of internal antennas.

By the way, the Sierran Wireless Watcher software allows me to power down the radio when I'm not using it to conserve battery.

Re: Where to source a PCI Express Mini WWAM cellular modem card from?

I did a lot more antenna testing. I took the two WiFi antennas from a laptop and tried them with my AT&T HSDPA/HSUPA Sierra Wireless card.

I found they did not work well at all. At first I thought it might be the shielding of the case or where I placed them inside the Q1U. I took the back off the Q1U and ran the antennas out into open air and positioned them vertically about 18 inches apart. Even in that position, I had very poor reception. I ended up going back to the U shaped antenna that came with the USB dongle.

From my understanding, UMTS/HSDPA in Europe is on 2100 MHz and in the US it's at 1900 MHZ. Since a WiFi or Bluetooth antenna is tuned for 2400 MHz, it may work acceptable in Europe or Autralia, but in the US it does not work well at all.

When I have the card in the USB dongle with two antennas I received much better reception that using only a single antenna. For now, in strong signal areas my internal card works fine, but in weak signal areas the packet loss means very slow data speeds.

If anyone finds a source for antennas better tuned to the US frequencies, please post a link here.
