It's the same adaptor Michael... I'm doing a reinstall of the OS at the moment and so can't give you any further info.

    MoonDog:

My UMPC is the US Version and it was bought through Newegg.com. What is the name of the WiFi adapter in your Device Manager? As I stated before, mine is called "ASUS USB Wireless Network Adapter". And once again.. in the advanced tab there's no mention to power management.

I can't find the power option either in the devicesettings of the Asus wireless network adapter.

Mine is from Europe The Netherlands.

Okay..... Now I am REALLY confused.

Having just completed a full reinstallation (and it STILL did not sort out the GPS issue), I now find my wireless properties advanced option no longer has the 'Power Options' available.
It's not as if I have done anything different to what was on there before...
Maybe it was a different driver but all I can say is I now as you all can no longer alter the power mode anymore Confused [*-)]

Apparently the chipset used in the WiFi module is the ZD1211. I've been trying to get other drivers of this same chipset to see if it will display a 'power saving' option. I'm not very optimistic though. I think I should I use a proper asus driver.

I'll let you know if I get anything. If anyone knows how to get these options displayed, please let me know.

Re: WiFi Radio Strength on R2H

I jut got mine yesterday, US model BH-059T, with the extended battery. Actually my first problem was that it wasn't connecting to my 3Com router, but I figured out eventually that my router was configured to use channel 13 - which is allowed in Europe, but in US only channels up to 11 are allowed. I will contact ASUS on this issue, I've seen it before on my friend's Acer notebook and we fixed it by using a newer driver.

Anyway back to our low strength signal issue - I have the wireless router on the other floor, and if I try to connect from the the ground floor the signal is always low. My Vaio laptop gets excelent signal, wuth it's Intel 2200BG adapter.

I took off the battery and on the bottom of the unit it says the wireless adapter is an ASUS WL-159G - I'll try to find a newer driver to see if things get better. Already tried to install Intel Inf Update 8.1.1.1010, but that didn't seem to make a difference to the signal, althought it seems to me the CPU ysage has droped from being 100% most of the time, but not quute sure yet if that did improve things (not yet anyway ;-)

    Hi,

Here is a link to the article I wrote on how to update the Intel chipset drivers, I'd be curious if it fxes the disconnect issue for you too.

I should note that I'm using Windows Zero Config to manage wireless connections, not the ASUS tools.

Re: WiFi Radio Strength on R2H

I just wanted to add that I seemed to have fixed my WiFi woes.. I noticed in the options for the Asus Wireless Control Center you can disable Auto Roaming.  Seems my disconnects were caused when it disconnected to try another connection.  It's in the Control Center (Right click in taskbar, then mouse over Activate Configuration.  First option is Auto Roaming.  If there's a check, just click to disable.  This area is also a quick way to switch connections, say from work to home)

My connection still says low, but I've been getting normal, if not excellent speeds since I disables Auto Roaming. (over 350KB).

While it may not fix everyone's problems, thought I would mention in the off chance it helps someone.  I also got mine in the US from Newegg.com, if that matters. :)

Anyways. hope it helps someone. :)

Re: WiFi Radio Strength on R2H

    Hi mylife64,

Thanks for sharing back your findings.

It makes sense that the low strength signal is causing the device to try and find a network with better signal - usually for Intel wireless chips this is a setting available in the driver properties (Roaming Aggressiveness), why Asus has put it only in their tool beats me...

Intel chips also have a couple of driver properties that can affect signal strength, Transmit Power and Power Management, I could bet that Asus has set them so that the device consume less power, even when running on AC, therefore the low signal or constantly changing connection speeds.

Edit: I know I read a few good blogs and forums before I got my R2H, and I should note for people reading this and thinking "no way, I'm not getting that" - even with the disconnect issues, that can be fixed one way or the other, or the low signal, I still get about good Internet speeds at around 300 KB/s, and I'm pretty happy with it.

Re: WiFi Radio Strength on R2H

Turning off the auto-roaming has fixed the weak signal issue for my R2H as well.  Thanks for the tip!

Now I can return that USB wi-fi adapter I purchased :)

    Cheers.

Re: WiFi Radio Strength on R2H

Might fix the disconnects, but I gave up using the Asus utility and switched to the 0 config a while ago - and this isn't an option to fix those problems :(

    Hi,

see if updating the Intel chipset drivers will fix your disconnect issue - see article here.

This may well be what fixed my disconnect issue (I was going for the CPU problem, but I'll take any improvement I can get).
