(Single Click now Works) Turn Q1's 8-way controller into a mouse pointer

    Updates
    1/25/2007 Ver. 1.0.16
    Utilizes scrollbars to update settings.
Slight change to how refresh rate is updated.

    1/24/2007 Ver. 1.0.14
Customizable buttons (u1-u4), settings button and volume buttons all work with single click.

    1/19/2007 Ver. 1.0.13
Slower default standard speed. This allows for finer control of the cursor.

    1/18/2007 Ver. 1.0.12
In cursor mode, double-click customizable buttons (u1-u4) or settings button to use them.

    1/17/2007 Ver. 1.0.8
Enter (the right-middle button of Q1) is converted to left mouse click in the cursor mode.

    Description
I suppose there are plenty people who like me in time wish Q1's 8-way controller is a mouse pointer instead. While Q1 provide such operation if you press the setting button at the same time, the cursor response is very sluggish. The following little program is designed to overcome this inconvenience:

    http://www.ticoneva.com/programming/mpm/MPM.exe

    Instruction
After launching the application there will be a cursor icon on the system tray; double click the icon to control the cursor through the 8-way controller. Right click on the icon to access more options. Once the applcation is launched, attempt to launch a second copy of the application will toggle between cursor and arrow keys (just like showhide.exe of Dialkeys). Note that what the program does is mapping the arrow keys to the cursor; as a result you can only use one of the two at any given time.

    Feedbacks are welcome!

So does this program allow the mouse to move more smoothly?

Eureka! It works beautifully. I knew someone smarter than me would figure this out sooner or later.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Re: A program to turn Q1's 8-way controller into a mouse pointer

Now that I'm done gushing, a couple minor issues.

    1) When the app is on, it takes over the arrow keys for an external keyboard too. Not a big deal, I don't need it on when I have a KB and Mouse connected.

    2) None of the other buttons seem to work when the app is on (U1-U4, screen resolution changer or the utilities button. The enter button works fine. I think I understand why the utilities button (bottom right) wouldn't work but the other will be a problem down the road.

    3) I'd love to be able to turn it on and off by tapping the icon in the task bar. This is a request, not an issue.

    Great app!

Re: A program to turn Q1's 8-way controller into a mouse pointer

great app! I agree w/Mark about losing the U1-U4 buttons.  If that could be fixed I'd saythe app would be darn near perfect, but I do have one question, would if be possible to change the speed the cursor moves? It seems mine is zipping left, right, top to bottoma bit too fast at times.Thanks.-Matt

The program works great! I don't mind loosing the capabilities of the custom buttons on the right during cursor mode. All you need is to toggle to arrow mode before clicking on it. Not a big deal! Great work, this makes me rethink of selling my Q1 for Asus.

Re: A program to turn Q1's 8-way controller into a mouse pointer

Thanks for all the feedbacks and comments! The headline is I have uploaded a new version (1.0.12) which allows the use of the customizable buttons and the setting button if you double-click them--I'll explain why this is necessary in a moment; let me first address some other suggestions:

    1. Arrow Keys--The 8-way controller is inherently arrow keys; I don't think there is any way to separate the two.

    2. Tap to activate--This function is very easy to add. I actually have that in an earlier version but it interferes with the usage of the pop-up menu--Windows always fire left and right click together when one tap-and-hold on the application's icon. I might add that as an option in a future release.

    3. Speed--You can lower the speed in the Settings dialog, which you can access by right clicking on the application's icon. However I doubt this would achieve what you want, which I guess is finer control over the cursor. The issue is that the 8-way controller is inherently arrow keys; as such its firing is limited by the keyboard key repeat rate. You might want to try increasing the keyboard key repeat rate while lowing the speed setting within the application.

    4. Customizable buttons--Now the hard part. The customizable buttons and the setting button are not standard Windows keyboard keys; while Windows can detect their firing it cannot distinquish them from one another. Furthermore for some reason once an application hooks into Windows' keyboard events, no signal is able to reach the programs that control these buttons. I worked around this by temporarily switching back to arrow mode when you press any of these keys--this is the reason why a double-click is needed in order to use them.

    Double clicking the U keys?

Re: A program to turn Q1's 8-way controller into a mouse pointer

Yes, the User definable keys now work by double clicking on them. They didn't work the first time I tried the new version. Had to go back to arrow mode and then to cursor mode then they worked. Maybe because of installing over the old version.

    Great utility!

Re: A program to turn Q1's 8-way controller into a mouse pointer

Very nice. Double clicking the buttons is fine and I didn't expect that there was anything you could do about the keyboard arrows.

But this 1 day responsiveness is going to kill you. Take a week next time because if you keep making this look easy we'll start asking for hard stuff and expecting it in a day!

    Thanks again.
