I completely agree with ThoughtFix. Here at work I get people all the time asking about UMPCs. But once I tell the the price they think I'm crazy for paying what I paid for the Q1. In some ways I agree. When I ask them a price they would pay for one, the highest I get is $650.

Its a shame that Vista will bump the price of UMPCs. Or maybe not. There's a void between $400 and $800 that needs to be filled.

    HTC UMPC?

Jeremy,  maybe this is a question for another blog post but I think those of us trying to run Vista on a UMPC would benefit if you could possibly put out a post that outlines any settings those of you on the Origami Project team have used to optimize your Vista/UMPC Experience.

    Thanks!

    Hi Matt,

I can get the ball rolling on that. It would be good to have a living thread that everyone can contribute to.

    Re: Origami Experience™ download link?

Hi again Chippy and anyone else curious.....I had an image from a previous (pre sony driver updates) install of the RTM, I brought it back to life on my UX280p  Anxiously I went to install the Origami Exp Pack and thought it was going to work until I was left with the message...."Origami Experience runs only on Ultra-Mobile PCs running Windows Vista" I am indeed extremely disappointed. Can one of the Origami Project team shed some light on this for me please? Is UMPC a MS branding? Sony labels the UX as UMPC. Am I out of luck or is this because the Vista version I am installing OE on with is RTM not retail? After hearing about the OE I was excited to migrate to Vista but in all honesty if I can't get the OE to run it'll be some time before I care to change my OS.

    Re: Origami Experience™ download link?

Just installed OE on my Asus RH2 with Vista. Running fine with 1,2 GB memory. Fullsize video without delays. I only needed to install the codec to watch 24!

Thanks to the guys (and girls) in Redmond for understanding our needs and delivering such a nice product for free.

It looks very promising for the future of our UMPC's.

The Sony UX was in the MS keynote video at CES so they're 'in' as far as MS' definition goes. (Funny they weren't in last year and the product is the same.)  Maybe its the RTM issue?

    Re: Origami Experience™ download link?

I'm certainly appreciative of the work the team has put into the Origami Experience, but I have to ask, why was this software released BEFORE any of us could realistically run Vista on our UMPCs?  And before a few of you jump down my throat and tell me how great Vista is running on your UMPC, let me just say I loaded it on my Q1P and got as far as all forum posts and blogs could take me, and without those drivers, it was a miserable experience.  It looked pretty and showed off well, but when it came down to usability, it was frustrating.

My OQO 02 won't even ship for 4 weeks.

I'm more frustrated at the manufacturers for dragging their feet than Microsoft, but it probably would have been polite to release this software at a later date instead of dangling a carrot in front of a bunch of legless children.

Is there any way the developers could confirm why my UX was not detected as UMPC hardware? Who could I contact w/ my question? Thanks again.

Here is my guess. The installer is checking for the screen size and it´s less than 7 inches it considers the devices as something else but UMPC.

Actually, The VAIO is not a UMPC per se. It did not ship with the TouchPak initially because Sony did not license that part from Microsoft. Maybe there's some sort of hardware identifier for which the installer checks to see if it is hardware that licenses the TouchPak.

well, you should say, the UX is not an Origami because it´s a UMPC.

Makes me feel like the kid in grade school with uncool sneakers. I did see on another site you could bypass the install by extracting the MSI. I'll try it later and report back if anyone is  curious of the results.

I have not download it yet but if you can get the MSI it´s a child game to avoid any conditions. I have done this a lot of time to install the experience pack in tablets with Spanish OS. The Experience Pack check the language and it has to be English.
