Re: OQO MODEL 02 (Handtop): New Official Info + Media:

Dynamism.com announces the OQO Model 02 is now available for immediate purchase at Dynamism.com. Measuring 5.6 x 3.3 x 1.0in and weighing less than 1 lb, the OQO 02 is powered by a 1.5GHz VIA ultra low-voltage CPU that breezes through Windows XP, or Windows XP Tablet. It features 1 GB (max) RAM, and up to 60GB hard drive.

The new OQO 02 is interesting from a review standpoint. OQO comprehensively addressed the complaints that dogged the original 01 -- adjustments that are outlined at www.dynamism.com/oqo02, which also features an excellent comparison of the OQO 02 and the Sony UX.

Featuring a hard drive with three useful features, the OQO 02 is shock mounted, has automatic drop detect to minimize the risk of data loss and the ability to create a hardware-encrypted virtual hard drive to protect sensitive data.

Video performance, driven by a VIA VX700 with integrated GPU with dynamically allocated RAM is particularly impressive. Users can “zoom in” in order to make small text easier to read and also “Zoom out” to increase screen resolution beyond the native 800x480. This feature is useful when viewing large documents, graphics or web pages. Video output is supported on VGA, HDMI and DVI, up to 1920x1200. Dual-display is also supported.

Customers can purchase the OQO 02 with integrated Sprint EVDO WWAN for ultimate connectivity on-the-go. (Note: Sprint module will work on Sprint-only and not any other carrier. This WWAN option only functions in the United States and requires a data service subscription with the carrier at additional cost to any existing plan.)

As with all products on Dynamism.com, the OQO Model 02 includes unlimited Dynamism toll-free technical support and Dynamism.com Rescue Warranty. Shipping for this new model will begin in February.

5-inch, 800x480 pixel display (with active digitizer for pen-based input)
    - 5-inch screen: good
    - 800x480: good
    - active digitizer: bad!

Sorry that would ba a nogo, I like my touchscreen PDA/UMPC.

Re: OQO MODEL 02 (Handtop): New Official Info + Media:

The OQO is an interesting gadget. Amazing that they can pack all that into that small device. But I still wouldnt want one from the following reasons:

    - 5 inch screen - too small - To work without having to have the screen in your face to read it at 800x480 resolution, anything smaller than 7 inches is bad. You'll end up scaling the font and whats the point then with the higher resolution?

    - Active digitzer, as poster above said - I think the whole beauty of UMPCs is the touch ability - I use my Q1P with my finger almost 50% of the time.

    - Keyboard adds bulk - why do you need one? Use a bigger onscreen keyboard. The keyboard I have on my Q1P, InScribe (free download), I can have a full qwerty keyboard on half the screen and do all my typing very quickly - buttons are probably bigger than the OQO.

    - Price, hey $1900 for the best version and you dont even get XP Tablet edition. At $1250 you get an equally specced Samsung Q1P (yes the Via processor/chipset kit is slower than the pentium M, even if the Via is 1.5 GHz.). I think the OQO should be priced at around $1200 to be of interest.

Unless you really need to put the computer in your pocket I would go with a Samsung Q1 or Asus R2H today - you get so much more for your money.

Well thats what I think anyway... :-)

Johncl I agree all the way with you.
the screen is too small and it´s not touch screen
the keyboard speed will be the same as the use of the handwriting recognition
and the price is too high.

Actually the 02 model does have a touch screen. It's hard to see, but when you look really closely at one of the videos live from CES posted on slashgear.com, you can see the OQO rep scroll down a website with his finger (on the screen, duh). I don't know why you'd think it doesn't have a ts, quite odd if OQO didn't mention it on their site.
    happy CES!

Re: OQO MODEL 02 (Handtop): New Official Info + Media:

Even though its far from perfect, I personally find it well suited for my daily lifestyle. I'll probably  purchase one, once it hits around $1200 (or less). Although thats if nothing better is released (at a reasonable price), in the time being (Averatec).

Yea, I'm just waiting for a slight price drop (which may be awhile). Also the OQO-M2 does feature an Active Digitizer, which will work with a opitional digital pen (included with the tablet edition).

Re: OQO MODEL 02 (Handtop): New Official Info + Media:

    Thanks for the update, Maxiv.
I don't think I'll be in the market for one of these puppies any time soon, but OQO did a great job! It's a sweet-looking device, and a real powerhouse. I'll see how things develop, and maybe OQO is an option for me, when prices drop. The only unresolved matter they didn't manage to get fixed is how the device heats up steadily, which is nice in winter, but not so much when you want to hold it over a long period of time.
    cheers

Re: OQO MODEL 02 (Handtop): New Official Info + Media:

You have all the reason. I had bought an Asus R2H. It contains GPS, and 3 USB2 The 7 inches screen is perfect, smaller would be catastrophic and TOY! The OQO model 2 is VERY expensive! Also, slow procesor. I upgraded my R2H to 1.5 Gb RAM. It's very fast. I'm going soon to Vista with. I wonder is posible to upgrade the hard disc of my R2H up to 80 or 100 Gb? A 100 Gb would be excellent. Please don't be disappointed after...some few days...or less with a OQO model 2, or maybe you need it every hour with you. OQO model 2 is so small you'll need to scroll up, down, right, left or you have eagle eyes! Watching the hockey game on a 5 inches; is one pixel for the puck!Computer [co]

Re: OQO MODEL 02 (Handtop): New Official Info + Media:

I would have gone with the R2H also if I wanted one of the true 7" UMPC's, I think it best fits the spirit of the Origami project & UMPC's with all its features. I would have said the Q1p for its 1.2 Ghz Intel Centrino & stereo speakers, but hear it has a joystick like a PSP...

Yes OQO's are spendy, but if I chose a UMPC and got most of the "must have" accessories & extended service plan, it would be up there in the $2k field, and I wanted the pocket size 5" screen. But if we were to watch that same hocky game, that little dot of a hockey puck on my OQO 02 would only be maybe a pinhead bigger on your 7" R2H, because they have the same screen resolution, although my screen might be more vibrant indoors or outdoors from what they describe the 02 screen, and we both would miss out on that "great" Vista Aero Glass experience. If anything I wish the screen was 1024 x 768, but still small enough the whole unit fits in my shirt pocket.

I don't know about slow, have you seen an 02 running? I haven't either but it is supposed to be 4 times faster than the 01+ which I'm sure was slow compared to your R2H, but the 02 has a 1.5 Ghz Via CPU now with 1 Gb memory, so it might be able to keep up with your 1 Ghz Intel Celeron & 1.5 Gb. memory. Really I wish the 02 had an Intel DualCore 2+ Ghz CPU & 2 Gb Ram, but 02 would have to be a lot bigger to handle the heat & bigger CPU/graphics chip set.

JKK's comment about not able to run media center, I think it can because OQO is offering the 02 with Vista Ultimate with the caveat it can't handle Vista Premium graphics like Aero & Glass, but they claim in their KB it can do video streaming, DVD movies, some 3D, etc... I'll find out. The 02 must have those pesky drivers to support Vista that others don't have yet.

Battery life, I'm going with the extended battery to get 4 to 6 hours. Really I'm not impressed with any of the UMPC's battery life although I'm impressed with those squeezing the daylights out some to get 6+ hours.

I really wish the 02 had a touch screen but it was not high on my list. It would have been great to get in touch with that Origami Experience, which I heard the 02 does work with, but I can live with out that as much as others with a keyboard. I like keyboards and look forward to inking with a pen. If I had a touch screen I would probably have to clean the screen often to read the teeny tiny text anyway.

Normal on the go I'd like to have it available in my pocket or clipped to my jeans, rather than a carry bag slung over my sholder or try to carry it like a book. Of course traveling I'll have to carry some bag for the assessories and maybe a magazine or two, but thats okay. I plan to use a decent size LCD monitor, full size keyboard, and mouse when I'm settled in a hotel room or home.  Anyway, I don't plan to sleep with it, otherwise I would have got a bigger one with a touch screen...

Re: OQO MODEL 02 (Handtop): New Official Info + Media:

Another update on the OQO 02 on their web site:

OQO Demonstrates model 02 Ultra Mobile PC with Embedded HSDPA Capability at Novatel Wireless booth at 3GSM World Congress

    at http://www.oqo.com/news/press_releases/2007-02-11_3gsm.html

This is not available yet, but them demonstrating it in Barcelona today is a strong indication they will be committed to addressing the needs outside of the U.S.A.. Hope everyone else will not have to wait too long for it to be available.

Looks like their broadband capability will give them a nice niche in the UMPC market. Only issue is you have to order the WWAN option up front and can't change it, more an issue for Sprint/Verizon customers wanting to switch. There is always the USB option which supports EV-DO Revision A, the 02 supports Rev. 0.
