I brought my folding keboard in but haven't quite got used to the small keys. Inking seems to be the  best way!

the machine definitely runs better - my TIP trailing problem is gone.

My first days with the UMPC

As I wrote earlier I received my Asus R2Hv (BH019C) a few days ago and here is my first report.

First of all, let's sort out what extras I got.
- Two batteries (2-cell and 4-cell)
- TV tuner
- Foldable keybord
- Car charger
- A strange EasySync thingy
- Some cables and an additional stylus

I didn't, however, get an external DVD burner which I was originally promised by the store. I have contacted them about that and they would look into it.

In general I'm really happy with the device and it really helped me out this weekend when I went on a little trip. The GPS helped me find the way and once there I used the TV tuner to record an episode of Numb3rs while I was busy playing Yatzy with my girlfried's parents.

There are a few drawbacks though. The worst thing is the performance. Once running, Vista is actually quite neat to deal with. I don't experience any real delays while starting or using the programs I have tried. However, getting there is a pain. Vista takes forever to start (and shut down) and it has also hang a couple of times. I have now removed some programs from the Autostart folder and also uninstalled a few things. Hopefully that will help.

When it comes to the screen I don't think it has been improved since the R2H. It is still very hard to read from it when outside.

Finally, a really big drawback is that Vista doesn't support Swedish handwriting, but I already knew that. Hopefully they will fix it soon.

(I general I guess you can say that I am happy with the hardware, but not as pleased with the software. I'm thinking of trying something else though. I am running Linux on my laptop and perhaps that would work well on the UMPC too. However, that is another story.)

Use Hibernate for a faster on/ off option.

If you get Linux to work with the R2H (BT, camera, etc...) please post how  you did it. I've found some information in Ubuntu forms.

Has anyone had problems coming out of sleep mode? At times my touchscreen will be unresponsive but the hardware buttons still work. Other times its completely locked and I have to restart using the power button. I'm trying hibernation now and so far it's working.

Mharrisson:  I have the regular R2H, and I installed Vista, myself, but you have something going on that seems familiar to me.

My touchscreen used to go out on me several times a day (not only after sleep), but then I found the Pan Jit touchscreen drivers on the net (I think that was last week) and installed them.  I'm pretty sure I haven't lost the touchscreen since then, which is great, since I never got anywhere with that devcon command.  Unfortunately, I can't recommend anyone else doing the same thing, since I had a couple of post-sleep BSODs after the install (though not anymore) and the drivers I found weren't for Vista.  It's just something I wanted to put out there, in case anyone in a position to help with maybe fixing the Vista drivers could possibly read it or have his/her attention directed to it.

Did you actually install Streets & Trips 2007 via network?  I tried that with S&T06, and it rudely informed me that I couldn't do a network install.  I copied the files to HD, but it did the same thing.  I ended up making ISOs and mounting them via Daemon Tools, which--as they say somewhere else in the world--worked a treat.

I've had a lot better luck with the touch screen using hibernation instead of sleep mode. I'm going to play with it awhile and see what kind of updates show up.

I hard wired my R2HV and my laptop into my wireless router and then used the DVD drive on the laptop to install Streets & Trips 2007. I installed MS Works 8 using WiFi and a network drive (it was slow but worked).

This thread has gotten quiet, how's your R2HV working out? I've gotten the Blue screen of Death a few times and still having a problem waking up. I may try to upgrade to 2 gig of ram also, it runs fairly well most of the time maybe I'll reinstall the OS someday and see if that helps.

Like to hear how things are going for you a udd and did you get an Asus, branded TV tuner?

Oops, I missed that question. Sorry about that! My excuse is that I have just started working 12 hours shifts, so I do not do much more than working and sleeping right now.

The R2Hv is working fine, however. I still have not installed all necessary programs, so I am still very dependent of my laptop. The reason for not installing stuff is not really that it is hard or time consuming, it is just that I have not really decided if I want to run Windows or not. Vista is faster now, so it is quite ok, but I am not used to the interface. And, most importantly, the handwriting is not working for Swedish.

Speaking of handwriting that is actually a quite important part of the whole UMPC experience. I have a foldable keyboard which I plug in whenever I need to write something, but that is very cumbersome. When I am on a bus or train I have no real trouble using my laptop. However, when I use my UMPC I need to hold two parts (and a cable between them). I find it quite hard to keep all this in my lap (especially on bumpy rides when I am afraid of dropping something on the floor).

I have now realized that what I really wanted was a small laptop with the ability to disconnect the keyboard. That would really be useful. What I am trying to do now is figure out some way (a portable stand or something) to make the UMPC and the keyboard to stick together.



And yes, I got one of those TV tuners from Asus. However, when I tried to watch it the picture was lagging. I don't know if this was due to bad signal or slow computer.

This perticular one has a very slow procesor (A100=600Mhz) but there are others like the P1610 which are much faster (and more expensive).

My shifts aren't quite as bad, I start 10 hrs next month.

The handwriting is works very well with English, even with my poor handwriting. I also have the folding keyboard and have to agree at times it would be nice if they were attached.  I wish I could modify the case and make it similar to the Q1 organizer, maybe there's a  portable DVD Player case that will work. If I come up with something I'll post some pics.

We took a short vacation this weekend so I tried the GPS. The directions were accurate the only down side is that when you miss a turn and get off route it won't make adjustments to get you back on route as some of the dedicated GPS systems will.

 

im guessing the reason why the gps won't automaticly reroute is because of the software and not the gps itself. well my r2hv shipped today so i'll be getting it thrusday. I can't wait.. I hate waiting lol.

Could anyone of you guys post the Vista Performance Score for this device with 1 Gb and 2 Gb?

Another petition, could anyone run this benchmark and  post a screen capture showing the result?
