    Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

    http://www.gottabemobile.com/SamsungQ1UltraDoes2GB.aspx

    - Hugo Ortega

I’m a geek, I’ve always felt like a geek, and now having a Samsung Q1 Ultra in my hands really reinforces it. She (I know it’s a she) arrived today via FedEX and rather impatiently I tore open the FedEX box and booted her up before the FedEX Man had even left the building. My intentions are to nurture her for a bit less than a week and do whatever it takes to prove, or disprove, myself as a devotee.

At this stage I have no real hang-ups regarding the device so I’m feeling pretty neutral. I neither love nor hate the two cameras; I neither love nor hate the QWERTY keyboard; and I most certainly neither love nor hate the new shape. It will be fun and my intention is to post a video some time in the future regarding my experience.

So with device in hand and time to burn what was a man meant to do on this first date? What else but upgrade her memory of course! Since becoming the proud owner of several 2GB sticks of RAM I decided that our first date would include nothing less than a memory transplant! My motto for the last week has been “I’ve got 2Gig sticks and I’m not afraid to use them!”

    Notes on performance:

Here are my observatiosn so far. The upgrade improves the following: boot up time, shut down time, program launch speeds, multitasking abilities, file transfer abilities...and so on. I am yet to tweak the machine but it definitley improves all of the above, and for me that's more than enough at this stage. You'll never make the Processor any faster but this RAM really helps. I look forward to hearing from you in the future mate regarding your Q1U experience...sounds like your pumped!

Just out of curiosity, have you tried to patch up AVS NOW to work with 2GB? I read you could do that with the Q1P, wondering if Samsung has one for the Q1U.

What is AVS NOW? Is that the program what allows to play media files w/o booting into Vista?

Anyway, my Q1U won't be here til Thursday.

Yes, AVS is the program that allows you to play media files without booting. But I hear it is very limited.

Oh, didn't notice you were just quoting Hugo. I'd like to get a copy of AVS NOW just to see if I could hack some additional codecs in.

I'm also waiting for a Thursday delivery.  I'm assuming the you are swapping out a 1 Gig memory module and replacing it with a two gig, is that correct?  If so what memory "specs" are required for this upgrade.

Yes, I will be swapping out the 1GB for the 2GB module. I believe that the Q1U is spec'd to run at PC4200 speeds, but a PC5300 module will work just fine since it will just downclock.

I just ordered this Patriot 2GB stick for $89.99 shipped free from Frys.com. It will also be here on Thursday:

Mazda_3s... am also trying to see if I can purchase Q1u ($1200 version) and a 2G RAM.

Would be great if you can post your views on the RAM you have ordered and its compatibility.

    Thanks, Smile [:)]

Shoot.........just a few minutes too late.....just finished the install.

Things of note regarding the install. 7 screws 5 long 2 short. Very easy to take apart. No seals I could see. Just take out the seven screws then take a flat head screw driver and release the plastic clip your can see under the port cover right next to the VGA out. Next run your finger nail along the edges between the two pieces of the plastic case and it will pop apart. Be careful not to break any of the plastic clips, don't force it.

Interesting innards. There is a fingerprint PCB on the motherboard. There is SIM card holder and an empty miniPCI slot. It seems like it may be easy to pop an evdo or HSDPA WWAN modem card in, a la tankgirl and the OQO2. Would probably need to source an antenna though.

Nice tight construction. HD upgrade also looks easy. RAM install was a breeze. If you really want pictures I may consider taking it apart again if needed......now to test system performance......

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

wow, an empty minipci slot? that offers possibilities. Could throw in an 802.11n or wimax, or some other future wireless spec card, or even a potential co-processor, assuming one gets made...me loves OTS components :)

Is the CPU hard wired into the motherboard? If not, I wonder what kind of socket it takes and what else is available in that socket (and supported by the chipset)

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Well my initial qualitative assessment of performance is very positive. Everything is much faster and smoother. TIP is very smooth. sleep, reboot, shutdown etc... much faster. Windows open and close faster. Overall just a much smoother experience. 2GB is probably a must have upgrade for any Q1 ultra owner with vista. I am actually going to turn some eye-candy back on. The machine is a REAL pleasure to use right now. Throw in the ~7 hours of battery life with the 6-cell battery and you have a winner!!
