devwild:Hibernate does not use battery, it stores resident memory to disk and turns off.
Then what's the difference between hibernate and shut-down?
When your computer sleeps - the cpu is placed in a special 'stalled' mode and the memory controller puts the RAM in a low power mode where contents are kept alive. This is necessary because the memory is volatile - if it loses power, it loses all of its contents. Worse, because of the way they're designed, they'll lose their contents if they're not accessed regularly and that's what the controller is doing - constantly pumping the memory to keep the contents alive.
When your computer hibernates - the OS suspends and all of the memory is written to the hard drive along with a snapshot of the cpu's state. That's essentially taking a snapshot of the entire computer's current state and storing it to the hard drive. At that point, you can turn the power off entirely and you've lost nothing. On boot up, the cpu is restored to it's saved state and the memory is loaded back up and boom - off you go as if nothing happened.
With Vista - these are kind of blurred now because when you sleep your computer - it actually does the same thing as hibernate - but then goes into sleep mode. The reason for this is rather clever - if your computer loses power in normal sleep mode - you lose everything - but with this new hybrid mode, it would see this as coming back from hibernation and put everything back the way it should be - and you lose nothing.
In terms of power - sleep mode does burn power - hibernate doesn't.

rocketman:
I have the same problem, I press the AVSNow button when the computer is off, I see an AVSNow screen for a second and then Vista boots. After logging into Vista AVS automatically shows. The programmer that came up with this must have been a genius! Hopefully the Q1 will last me until Apple comes to the rescue.
Until Apple does come up with a tablet device, could we please keep that subject out of here? It's speculation and not particularly productive. The last thing I want to see here is a Mac vs PC debate. I see way too many of those in other forums like Engadget.
Anyway, if you really want to run MacOS X on a UMPC, it's been done. I'm not going to give details because it's technically illegal since Apple doesn't sell their Intel OS to anyone but Intel Mac owners and locks it through a hardware TPM chip, and while there are people who have defeated that lock, it's a violation of their EULA (and possibly of the DMCA), so I'm not going to encourage that here.

See link here for OSX on a Vaio UX --> http://www.micropctalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2140
As for using the sleep function on the Q1U, I think its great. I will even put it to sleep, while I sleep and the next morning its basically an auto-on and only a little bit of the battery has been used. I tend to keep the computer on all the time but then in sleep mode as opposed to my laptop which I just left on 24/7 (with a burned out lcd screen and hard drive as the consequences).

BeDoig:I haven't looked in the user manual, but it is posted online at Samsung's website if you want to take a look.
well, I did say that my question was directed at 'those who want their AVSNow function to work.' Since you're happy without the AVSNow feature, I don't really expect you to look at the manual anyway. I was asking those who are having problems with AVSNow on their Q1 Ultra and are actually trying to fix the problem : )
I just wasn't sure if you knew the manual was posted online. I spent quite a few hours looking it over there before I bought my Q1U. Here is what it says:
"Using AVStation Now, you can easily and quickly play music, photographs, movies and DVDs when the computer is on/off.
Start
When the computer is on or off, press the
AV button (AV).
The AVStation Now program is launched."
The only thing it says is that it allows you to "quickly and easily" play music, etc. Maybe they did do away with the separate operating system for AVSNow. It could just be a way of launching straight into the program, albeit through windows. Not exactly quick, but maybe because of all the limitations of the first system they decided to change it.

Just posted about this at my blog.
According to the latest information Q1U owners have found reading the Q1U manual: "Using AVStation Now, you can easily and quickly play music, photographs, movies and DVDs when the computer is on/off. Start When the computer is on or off, press the AV button (AV). The AVStation Now program is launched." This means that the Q1U is just equipped with a hot button or a launcher, that points to the AVStation Now Program. In another words, the Q1U does not have the instant on partition with XP embedded like it used to be in the old Q1 devices. -- Posted By CTitanic to ULTRA MOBILE PC TIPS at 6/29/2007 03:13:00 PM

ctitanic:Hum... sounds to me that what you got guys is a quick lunch button. Or in another words a hot key button pointing to AVStation button. Just look, they are not calling it any more AVSNow, they are calling AVStation Now Program. So that answer all your questions. There is not any Instant On partition or AVSNow partition in the Q1U.
Man, I would love for my Q1U to have a quick lunch button. Push the button and out pops a delicious sandwich and some chips. Now that would be a feature I'd pay extra for.

I wasn't trying to imply that I know anything for sure. Just that it doesn't say specifically that it launches the program without booting windows.

Ha! Now that would be a nice feature. I don't know why that's so funny but I almost busted out laughing in the middle of my office. P.S. Not trying to insult you ctitanic, just thought it was a funny typo.

I'm just reading through the manual online (version 2.0), and I see that there are two different types of AVS software for the Q1 Ultra. One is 'Play AVStation', which starts on page 122, and this is the one that seems to be the Windows software requiring start-up of Windows.
Then there is 'AVStation NOW', which starts on page 136, and this one looks like the 'instant-on' software which is supposed to open instantly when the AVS button is pressed.
Another thing I notice is that in the titles / headers of pages 122 and 136 of the user-manual, it says: 'Play AVStation (optional)' and 'AVStation NOW (optional)', with the word 'optional' after the names of the software. Could this mean that the instant-on feature is only available on certain models of the Q1 Ultra, and not others? This would explain why it's not working on some people's models.
Here is a link to download the user-manual version 2.0:
