Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

Ubuntu already has some on screen keyboards. This is one example:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Accessibility/Projects/onBoard

Perhaps you can try these keyboards or approach their developers. You are more than welcome to point them to zwkb if you like how zwkb works. Maybe they can produce something similar for Linux.

I do generic programming on nix from time to time. I think doing hardware specific coding on these platforms would be quite daunting, not least from lack of technical information.

    Hey Devdoo6:
I love the ZWKB. I have a Q1 Ultra which also has Ubuntu installed by using Wubi. So, it's dual boot. I tweaked the screen resolution to 1024x600, got touch working perfectly, installed a Novatel U720 Sprint broadband modem in the internal minipci slot  - it works in both windows and Linux. So, in Linux, it's a hot little device. The only thing lacking is ZWKB. How about a Linux version?

    Thanks

Wubi looks awesome.  Perfect for someone like me who wants to give some form of Linux a try, but isn't ready to spend the time/energy really diving into it.  I'm trying this ASAP.

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

Keyboard is great. the best I've encountered.

Have a problem though on my Q1 ultra.

When ZWKB is running and I click onto say, the start menu, then open sub menus they flash off and on. Also if I right click an icon, by the time I move the cursor to the item I want - the menu disappears.

Lots of windows flash off and on.

Done restore, reinstall etc and find this only happens when ZWKB is open.

    Any thoughts?

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

The flashing may have something to do with the keyboard's stay-on-top code. I come across that occasionally. Just shut down and restart the keyboard should solve the problem. If this is an annoyance, you can try using the previous version of the keyboard, a link to which is indicated in the read me file.

If you are using Vista, then all bets are off. The keyboard doesn't work exactly the same on Vista as on previous Windows.

I'll release another version of the keyboard soon. Hopefully that will work better for you.

    Hi DevDoo6,

Just stumbled across your keyboard - via a posting on jkOnTheRun discussing another on screen keyboard.

Downloaded, installed and just wanted to congratulate you on a job really well done. I'm using an Acer C210 tablet - active digitizer - so not able to touch type and get best out of it.

However looking to buy a TabletKiosk Sahara dual screen slate and your keyboard is already allocated to be one of the four programmable hot keys.

    Quick question (as as non-techie) can you point me towards some help on these;

"These commands can be defined in Windows shortcuts for convienience" : How do
    you carry this out

After adding to Quick Launch how can you run it without the User Account Control : Unidentified Program prompt appearing - if  the .exe file is dragged straight onto the Quick Launch bar however it runs without the prompt!

Many thanks and keep up the great work

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

Thanks. I've tried shutting it down and going again but no joy. I am on XP BTW.

May try the previous version but look forward to the next release.

    Again, great work and thanks.

First of all you need to know what Windows Shortcut is. If you don't know, google should give you lots of answers quicker than I can explain.

Assuming you have installed ZWKB in

       C:\Program Files\zwkb\

Youn can normally start the keyboard with no sound using Windows Start->Run, and enter:

       "C:\Program Files\zwkb\zwkb.exe" quiet

An alternative way to do this is to create a Windows Shortcut, and set its Target property to

       "C:\Program Files\zwkb\zwkb.exe" quiet

Now, you can double click on the Shortcut icon to start the keyboard with no sound instead. This is convinient because you no longer have to retype the run command everytime you need to start the keyboard.

Once you have created a Shortcut with all the keyboard options you want. You can drag the Shortcut into the Quick Launch. Whenever you click this icon in the Quick Launch, the keyboard would be started already configured to work the way you want. You can also drag the Shortcut in to the Windows Startup folder to have the keyboard started automatically everytime Windows starts.

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

    DevD006,

Thanks for that. Late in the morning but working perfectly.

I'm also experiencing the "flashing"taskbar issue mentioned by others, running Vista Business, but its no impediment to using keyboard or machine. Hopefully down the line if you continue to develop and polish the programme you'll ease it out.

Great work and glad I found it.

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

    Version 8.1.24 released

    www.freshnet8.com

    Stay On Top

The ability of the keyboard to stay on top of other windows has been enhanced with an acitive element that forces the keyboard to the top every 2 seconds and the Tap Box every 4 seconds. This enhancement works in conjunction with the existing passive stay-on-top capability, ensuring the keyboard stays on top of rogue winddows that do not report their true z-order positions.

The stay-on-top code has also been fixed to eliminate a problem that caused certain Windows desktop objects to flash previously.

    Easy Restart

For unknown reasons, the keyboard's performance is occasionally affected by certain legacy software and possibly also by Windows Stand-by and Sleep modes. The quickest way to bring the keyboard back to normal is to restart it. Therefore a new feature is implemented to allow the keyboard to be restarted easily.

The Easy Restart feature lets the keyboard to be restarted without first having to shut down. To restart the keyboard, simply run the keyboard again. The new keyboard instance will stop the existing running instance automatically and then take over. It should be noted that the keyboard is always hidden upon restart.

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

    Thank you DevDoo6,

it is a real pleasure to work with this very handy app. Personally I have modified the appearance in order to have very fat keys and a good "see-through" capability.

I like the option of using pen and ink whenever I can, and the zwkb for longer texts or entries in other languages or that would cause an headache to the handwriting recognition of the TIP. These are my two main input methods - I never use the dial keys, and make use of the split keyboard only for sporadic corrections.

    Thanks for your valuable contribution.

    DevDoo6:
Your mention of Z-order caused me to think of something that's troubling me; perhaps you have the answer. I have a Q1-U XP. As an aside which may be of interest to you, I recently Nlited it, which broke it intially, but I fixed all of the damage and the difference in performance is night and day. I previously hated it; now I thinks it's great.

Back to my question, which has nothing to do with Nliting, because I think the problem predates it. First, when I open a new window in Firefox, for example, it always lauches behind the calling window. Second, when I try to use menus in Firefox, for example, the menus open for a split second; too short an interval for me to even click the menu item.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

I have not used Firefox before, so I can't comment if what you describe is normal behavior for Firefox. You can always try installing it on another PC and see if you get the same thing.

It isn't clear to me if you are using the Firefox menus through a mouse or through ZWKB. ZWKB can be used to open menus on windows, for instance Alt-F typically opens the File menu of the active window. However, ZWKB cannot be used to select an option on the menu opened. The menu is a special knd of window that is closed as soon as the mouse pointer is clicked outside of the menu's screen boundaries. Tapping a key on ZWKB constitutes a mouse click. If the key is located at a different part of the screen to the menu, then the key tap would cause the menu to close and no option on the menu would have been selected.

I have the Samsung Q1 ultra and I need the US international layout for type portuguse words or how Can I customize the layout?

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

Sorry my friend. Only the US and UK layouts are supported at the moment. You can use the keyboard for other locales/languages. In that case, the symbols for some of the keys would not reflect the actual characters produced.

Re: Free Keyboard for UMPC and Tablet PC's

    Hi,

Like the ZWKB, which seems to meet my needs, especially with the many command line options. There is one key I can't find -- the Windows key, which I use quite often (on my desktop) in various key combinations to invoke applications or to enter boilerplate text.

Any chance of adding this key to the layouts?

    Thanks.
