Can I Use IPOD's Hard Drive to Replace My Q1U's 40gb HD ?

I was just curious that can I replace my 40gb hard drive in my Q1U with 80gb Ipod or 160gb Ipod's Hard Drives? I believe can since they are all 1.8" hard drives..

But I'm not sure about the connection.. I know Ipod's hard drive have Zif connection..

How about Q1U ? Are they ZIF or 50 Pin?

    Thank You.

P.S > If it is possible I will swap out my hard drive with 80gb Ipod's Hard drive since 80gb have 8mb cache compare to 2mb on 40gb..

I have alot of experience changing hard drives in mp3 players and advise you to be wary of any drive that has an apple logo, there is some encription that makes them useless in any other appliances. Some people have had sucess in formatting using swissknife and some have not.
The drive will fit as they are 1.8 inch and have zif connectors, just dont buy apple branded one and you should be ok.
Check the existing drive if it ends in gah it means its 8mm and there are lots out there that will fit.

Yes it will work for I have done it. I installed a 60gb Ipod Video hard drive into a Q1 and it worked perfectly.

There is no "encription" and even if there was you just delete the partition create a new one and and format to NTFS.

Yes it did have the Apple logo on it. I pulled the drive out of the Ipod myself and I distinctly remember the logo when I was installing it in the Q1.

Afterwards I checked Device Manager and it showed just the regular model number of the drive. The drives inside Ipod Videos are no different than any other 1.8" drives out there.

I dont know what kind of format or file structure Ipods use but is does not matter since you just delete any/all partions anyway.

    Thank You So Much !!

So, I should have no problem with swapping the hard drives right?

Currently, there are many people selling Ipod with broken LCDs for less than $100.

I was so tempted... My 40gigs just don't cut it....

Will 160gb works also? Considering 160gb hard is slightly thicker than the 40gigs...

    Thank You Again..

There is plenty of room the the slightly thicker 1.8" drives. The drives area in the Q1 is padded all around to protect from shock also.
