My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

    Origami Upgrade Project...

Well, here are the results of my latest upgrade to integrate internal HSDPA with my Q1u Premium and dual antennas…  To start out, I have given it a 2gb memory upgrade and an 8gb class 6 SD card for Ready Boost... so performance is excellent on the device.  Very nice!

    Before:

with the USB card out the top

    After:

     fully integrated HSDPA

Started here with an AT&T USB air card u881 to extract the Sierra Wireless modem…

     AT&T u881

Then moved to here to integrate the modem into the mini PCI socket…

     Q1uP internal

     Hitachi antenna

And then did the antenna upgrade to add a 2nd antenna along the top…

     Added 2nd antenna

Wrapped it up by using the built-in SIM socket, like this…

     Built in SIM socket

And now I have a nice, neat device with internal HSDPA so I can connect from everywhere...  With results like this!

     test 1

    test 2

And here is the Ram Mount in the car for easy access…

    Nice one there.
Does it really need the 2gb ram upgrade running xp?

Re: My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

It's running Vista Home Premium, so 2gb is needed. I am also running Ready Boost which also makes it a little snappier...

Re: My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

It is a Hitachi antenna mini-PCI wireless 802.11g, 802.11b OR bluetooth... The antenna is approximately 4" long and plugs in to the Aux antenna connection. The main antenna is mounted to the modem itself and ends up being placed just under the vent at the back/top of the Q.  The 2nd antenna will snug in easily inside where the mini-PCI card is located and has 2-sided adhesive tape on the back if you want to mount it.  I left it loose so it could face towards the front of the Q since it is under the battery... it's a perfect fit and won't move once the back cover is replaced.

I got it from VinnieMak on eBay.

That is SWEET.  Welcome to the land of internal HSUPA.  I didn't realize the USBConnect 881 had the antenna separate from the main board.  That makes this upgrade much easier.  The increased upload speed of HSUPA looks to be really nice.  As a side note I am only useing the hitachi antenna from ebay in my Q1UP and am getting nearly the same download speeds in Seattle as you are gettting with your upgrade.

    Bartman,
Are you noticing a significant difference in speed due to the ready boost? I'm trying to decide between buying the Q1-UP XP or Vista. Vista would be nice due to advanced inking, origami 2.0, and the 2gb ram preintalled, but I don't know if it's worth the speed reduction.

Re: My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

Ready Boost won’t speed up everything on your system but the user experience and switching between apps is much snappier. Disclaimer: I am not recommending this for everyone, just my preference and how I use this device. I know there has been a lot of scrutiny and discussion around Ready Boost and if it works or how it works, etc.  My take on it, is that by design, the caching makes the Vista user experience a bit snappier.  Meaning that apps open quicker, dialogues pop quicker and this is especially noticeable when running multiple apps and jumping between them. With all that said Vista and Ready Boost work best for my particular needs on the Q1’s.

Vista works better for my needs on this device and I prefer it over XP (I do have a couple of older, lower performance devices running XP, just not on the Q).  I use pen input heavily and the TIP (tablet input panel) on Vista is very snappy and works really well.

I have had the Q1uV and now the Q1uP-Vista with pretty much the same configuration and have had very good performance on both for how I use this device.  The only exception to the config is the HSDPA integration in the Q1uP.  I tend to use video conf more now with the Core Solo proc.  The standard config for this device (for my preferences): 2gb, 80gb drive and 4gb class 6 SD card only for Ready Boost.

Sorry for the long explanation and I realize this is a little off-topic, but I think it’s important to understand how I use the device to explain why it works for me (I should probably post the rest of these details in another thread)...

When travelling (airports, planes, shuttles…) I use this device and pen input almost exclusively since it works so well on Vista.  I have done this with both my previous Q1uV and the Q1uP.  I also do heavy text input and for that I have a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. When I run to meetings, in my sling-bag, I only take this device, the stowaway kb, mouse and headset (for UC calls and video conf that I make while on the run).  On my desk, I use a Mac Bluetooth kb with the Q since it is a nice solid little keyboard.

In addition to surfing and messaging, I use the device as a tool to get work done. I don't run dev-tools on it but I routinely run all or most of these: IE, Outlook, Live Messenger, Office Communicator, Groove, FreeMind, iTunes, Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop CS3, Corel X3, Excel, SharePoint Designer (it’s not unusual to have 8-10 apps running). I have both Groove directory synchronization and workspaces running on the Q1uP.  I occasionally will play an MP4 movie on the Q’s as well (with SP1 and Ready Boost that ran well on the Q1uV also).  The reason for Groove always running in the background, is that my theory/practice of data management might be a little different than most with regard to this... I don't want to take the time to put my data on a particular machine or have to offload it, use USB drives, etc. as I prefer this to be "transparent".  (e.g. - Data should just be there when I need it on whatever device I use at that time).  There are a lot of different ways to accomplish this, but “for me” the preference is to use Groove and have my directories or workspaces automatically sync'd, so when I want to pickup my Q and run off to a meeting or go work from a coffee shop, all of my stuff is there.  When I get back to my office and want to work from my ThinkPad x61, or from a desktop (or even open from a Mac [it grabs the file from a shared directory that is sync'd]) the files are already there for that device as well.  It's just transparent and no extra work for me...

Re: My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

Thanks for the info Bartman. I think my usage scenario will most likely be similar to yours, maybe not the same programs but as equally taxing to the system. I'll mainly be using it as a medical reference tool and data input device on the go with sugar-sync running in the background and of course the frequent entertainment uses (MP4's, rhapsody). I'm still slightly up in the air between the xp and vista versions, but your info gave me a better picture of performace.

Re: My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

I use the small Apple Bluetooth keyboard on my desk and it has a power but on the side (the round part)... the only issue I have with the Apple keyboard, is that it doesn't have some of the standard PC keys (page up/down; home; end, etc.) so you have to use a key mapper to alter some of the keys to get these functions.  I use SharpKeys by RandyRants to remap some of the keys for common functions that I need.

When I am out and about or traveling, I prefer to carry the Think Outside Stoway keyboard, which is a great little keyboard for on the go.

Re: My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

    Hi,

I get a Samsung Q1 ultra with vista!

Additionally I bought a sierra wireless modem ( Mini-PC MC8775 ) and tried to install it with

    the TRU-install ......

My Problem: vista sees a mini-pci, but nothing else and does not find any driver. Same with TRU-install..

Do anyone have any idea ?

Thanks for any hints and help

I thought you need to install 3g watcher?

Re: My Origami Upgrade... the Q1u Premium with internal HSDPA...

The driver should install if you install the Sierra Wireless 3G watcher.  You can get it here:
