    Installing XP on Samsung Q1U-V

    Hello,

I hope someone could help. I bought the Samsung Q1U-V early this year with Vista and I finally had it with Vista's slowless. I upgraded to 2GB of ram and did all the tweaks but I just feel that it runs like a hog.

Does Samsung offer the XP downgrade disc for free? How can I get it? I have an old copy of regular XP. If I install it will it add the tablet features?

I have looked for a copy of XP tablet 2005, but they don't sell them :(, so how is everyone installing it?

    Thanks,
    Maniaxe.

    Hi
Call your local microsoft office and tell them you are changing to xp and have your Vista licence key handy, they will give you a xp licence for free over the phone and use your old xp disc to install.

Re: Installing XP on Samsung Q1U-V

maniaxe, XP Tablet edition 2005 is available only with OEM purchases of a touch-tablet PC. (Official reply.)

maniaxe, you may be able to go to stores like NewEgg to buy a copy. It'll be hit or miss as they some times come into them once in a while. (Unofficial answer.)

You could also try to see if anyone is selling a copy on eBay.

Even if you acquire the XP Tablet 2005 edition, you will also need all the extras for XP from Samsung. You should be able to get those via their website.

It is also possible to "downgrade" from Vista to XP. This article from ComputerWorld tells you how to do it in detail.

    There are 2 caveats:

    • The first is that you have to have bought your PC with Vista via an OEM (not retail), and the Vista version has to be Ultiimate or Business.
    • The second is that if you have Ultimate or Business, you'll have to reinstall, and BEFORE you activate your install, choose the by phone method.
      • You then have to call Microsoft and the rep should talk you through the rest.
      • Check with Samsung to see if they will provide the XP disks to you, as some OEMs do provide them to you if you request them.

Please keep us informed as to how things go for you, and let us know what we may go through if any of us decide to "downgrade" as well.

Re: Installing XP on Samsung Q1U-V

    Thanks for the input guys,

So I don't think I can call Microsoft for a downgrade as the Q1U-V comes with only Vista Premium, so I'm out of luck.

I can try to buy XP Tablet 2005. I checked on Ebay and they are selling for around $175. Thanks Mike for the suggestion. I'm debating on spending the extra money.

Does anyone know what happens if I installed the regular XP on the Q1U? Will it upgrade it to the tablet version? That's what one of my friends tells me, but I doubt this.

    Thanks,
    Hung.

Re: Installing XP on Samsung Q1U-V

Regular XP will run fine on the Q1U. The only noticeable difference is that you lose the tablet functions and the on-screen keyboard that appears at the login screen. TIP will also be lost but XP has horrible handwriting recognition anyway, the normal on-screen keyboard from accessibility options will still be there.

You can get all of the normal functions of the Q1U back by installing the XP drivers for the Q1U from the Samsung support page. They will install and run fine on normal XP. Essentially, you only lose the login screen on-screen keyboard and TIP (XPT's TIP is similar to that of Vista's).

If you installed XP on the Q1U it will not upgrade to XPT.

Re: Installing XP on Samsung Q1U-V

You could still try to see what Samsung says. Maybe they'll work with you to make you happy.

Another option is to upgrade to a higher version of Vista, and then see if Samsung will work with you.

Finally, you could see if Samsung would sell you an OEM version of Windows XP Tabelt edition 2005.

Plain XP doesn't have the Tablet functions built in. So you know what you'll be trading if you install it instead.

Genius. I just ordered a DVD. HOpefully this will fix the speed issues, especially the wifi connection.

    I'll keep everyone posted.

Re: Installing XP on Samsung Q1U-V

Well, based on the information here, I ordered the recovery media from samsungparts, and installed XP Tablet on my Q1-EL

Quite an experience. I am a "Machead", so the complexities of installing Windows and the various error messages were a new experience. Since Apple controls the hardware and OS, there is less problems with re-installing system software, compared to the "variety" of the Windoze world.

Tips for anyone considering this in the future:

    1. Download all drivers and have them available on a USB drive. After installing XPT, I had NO working network drivers of any kind. Also, my video defaulted to 800x600, instead of 1078x600.

    2. A USB keyboard and mouse is NECESSARY. Therefore, you WILL need a USB hub of some type (keyboard, mouse, USB drive, USB DVD unit). Otherwise, you are 2-USB ports short.

At the moment, everything appears to be working. The unit is noticeably faster in startup, program launching, and return from sleep. I do miss the Vista screensaver, but that is a minor thing.
