OQO 02 does not have touch screen but...

According to news published today at PC Advisor:

...the 02 features numerous improvements over its predecessor. It's up to four times faster, and has a significantly brighter display (up to six times brighter than the model 01). The improved keyboard is now backlit and has capacitive TouchScrollers for easy navigation. The model 02 also provides an array of wireless connectivity: EV-DO Wireless WAN, 802.11 a/b/g, and optional EV-DO 3G support.
This clarify the doubt from some users that saw in a demo somebody touching the OQO 02 screen.

Well, the 01+ had an active digitizer and Tablet PC os. Did they drop that with the 02? That would suck!

they still have active digitizer. The touch scroller is something extra that they added to this version.

    Very nice!
I like active digitizers better, and the OQO is really small and mobile. Plus, it comes with Vista, so no upgrading and stuff. When is my birthday again?

Nah, OK, I'm already three quarters there, worth of about a year's savings. My dad isn't Bill Gates. But I'm guessing prices will be down then anyway (July).

With the OQO 02, you can get a digitizer, but if you go with the outdoor-viewable screen, you lose the digitizer.

Re: OQO 02 does not have touch screen but...

where did you get that information? Please post the URL of your source, I can't believe OQO would omit that major difference in their news release.

The OQO site does not state that & only the cheapest base model does not support Tablet PC functionality in XP or Vista. They specifically state that for the base model and no where else.

For those unaware of the OQO UMPC's, they do not have a passive touchscreen, all but the 02 base model does have an active digitizer screen requiring a wacom pen which is not provided with all units. It supports pen & inking functions. Also the tablet supported OQO has always been supported by the OEM MS Touch Pack or Origami Experience software meant for UMPC's only.

Re: OQO 02 does not have touch screen but...

Does anyone know if the OQO Model 2 has a place built-in to hold the digital pen? If not, then how are we supposed to carry it around with us?

Re: OQO 02 does not have touch screen but...

It is right at the OQO site where you can configure your OQO 02. If you choose the outdoor-viewable screen, the digitizer goes away, and your OS option becomes a choice of XP Pro, or Vista. (I don't remember the Vista flavor.)

Re: OQO 02 does not have touch screen but...

selecting the 64gb SSD or outdoor viewable screen only takes off the Windows Tablet PC OS option that includes a case & pen, giving you XP Pro or Vista Business to choose from.

That does not mean it is not an active digitizer screen, which you would have to purchase a wacom pen separately.

It is possble OQO decided not to provide a pen abled tablet screen, but their site & news releases does not say one way or another.  I'll ask and report back if no one else does.

As far as storing the pen, the belt clip case has a place or you carry it like any other pen. No built in pen silo, wish there was.

Re: OQO 02 does not have touch screen but...

Just confirmed from someone that was at CES 2008 and actually tried the new OQO 02 with the Outdoor viewable display, and it does have an active digitizer screen for inking & Tablet PC functionality. You'll have to get a Wacom penabled pen separately if you want to use it.

Because of their thumb keyboard & trackstick mouse, they don't bet the bank on Tablet PC input, so the pen is only included with Windows XP Tablet option, and pretty much a separate purchase for every other unit except the non-Tablet base model. I think they should include the pen & Tablet PC functionality with all models but that is their strategic decision in optimizing costs.

Re: OQO 02 does not have touch screen but...

I bought the original OQO DigiPen from Expansys (internally it's supposed to be from Wacom),
but the pen didn't have much to do since the initial tries after arrival.

It's so much easier and faster using the mouse surrogate (trackpoint) and keyboard
than using a pen and quirky special keys.

Maybe with the Tablet version of XP the digitizer would be somewhat more practical,
but even with my former Q1, which had the XP Tablet Edition installed,
I often wished to have a keyboard instead of those
insane apad and dpad 'keys', and those very small (and too few) control keys.

There's a video on oqotalk.com of an oqo engineer saying they are working on releasing a touch screen option
