All issues of running Vista on R2H and optional solutions by now

There are lots of tricks during the way of full function Vista with R2H.

Here's the brief tips for you guys:

    1. Hybrid ATK0100 ACPI driver to enable Right Button of setting page.

I don't know if its only my problems, when I installed program Asus_setting_center_vista_070315.zip downloaded from Asus' Support page, nothing happened on my R2H. Then I found, u must combined 3 drivers from other models so that the function could be used normally. Here's the steps:

    A. Former ATK0100 XP driver (ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/R2H/ATK0100_XP_060830.zip) u could find it both on your drivers cdrom and ftp site. And then, download "ATK0100_vista32_070313.zip" from ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/A6Tc/ATK0100_Vista32_070313.zip . Unzip this file, and use ATKACPI.SYS to replace the same one inside ATK0100 XP package.

    B. Setup ATKOSD2_vista32bit_070126.zip from R2H support page (http://dlsvr05.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/R1F/ATKOSD2_Vista32bit_070126.zip), u will find it does nothing but create a folder under C:\program files and only 1 file in it called ATKOSD2.exe.

    C. Rename Atkosd2.exe to atkosd.exe and replace the same file in the ATK0100 XP package. Finally, install this hybrid atk0100 driver. U would find all functions online after u installed wirless consle2 and P4G extreme. Moreover, u need put batterylife.exe, setting page.exe and wcourier.exe 's shortcuts into Startup folder manually if they do not start it as u expect.

    2. Cam problem and Touch Screen

It's creepy that most of guys ignore the Reg file inside the zip file Asus applies online called "Vista32_BN2AF_CR.reg". Double click it , u will find everything is ok for the cam.

When first installed vista, I found it was hard to calibrate touch screen from control panel. Here's the solution:

Create a file named "anyting u wanna.bat", type "tablcal novalidate" inside it, then save and close.

right click that bat file , and choose run as administrator. Done!

    3. Crash/Freeze Issues

Here's my finding. Disable wireless network connection in the "control panel/Network connections section", the freeze will stop. And u can enable it manually after vista loading over. Or..Maunually load batterylife.exe, wcourier.exe and Hcontrol.exe( this file could be found at windows/atk0100/), As those 3 files could cause crash/freeze during the startup proceeding. However, if u loaded it manually, which means configurate via running msconfig.exe, deseclect those 3 items, and put those 3 shortcuts onto your desktop, and running after startup proceeding everytime, then the crash could be avoided.

    4. Bluetooh.

From my experience, u need to install latest Bluetoon Stack package from Toshiba Germany website, therefore the voice function will be available. Otherwise, no advanced function could be used with embeded bluetooth driver. Here's the link:

    http://aps.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/pages/download.php

But I still got high untilizing when I actived bluetooth device...really suck....I highly doubt it's because of the natural poor performance of Celeron M ULV, especially there is no level 2 cache for our pitful R2H....Damn it...

Hope these tips could help u guys.

Did you run Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx) to see what process is actually using the CPU?
I recently had high CPU usage every time I started my R2H. Turned out to be the Windows Update program, even though I disabled the automatic updating in the Control Panel's settings.

    Cheers! Stefan.

^ Sigh, yes that windows update program is starting to be more trouble then its worth (on XP). It will kick in after you start a network connection because 'it wants to know if something needs updating' the problem is, it is starting to take way to much CPU/disk to check that...

Its less problematic on Vista (maybe because there are less updates still?)

(and I see we have another L2 enthousiast, just remember you can't get several megabytes of database data into any L2 there is currently out there, even Xeon's have 'only' 2MB, or 4MB shared)

    Hi, Stefan

I will try that tool later. However, I had figured solution out that if u stopped "Hcontrol.exe" from Task manager-processes list, the issue u mentioned would be solved. But it's still fussy as offline hcontrol.exe makes unavailable of setting page. I restart it manually everytime to keep setting page online.

    Cheers.

I'd like to report here that since I've installed the new BIOS update (version 207) available at asus download website the machine has worked wonderfuly! No more freezing! More than 10 reboots already. I'm able to enjoy Vista on it with EVERYTHING working. I'm finally installing all the regular applications since the 'installing vista' phase is over!

anyone find having problem on P4G to reduce the brightness as u set in the setting?

It does reduce the CPU performance as what i set but the brightness stay the same after i unplug the power..the animated icon pops out saying battery mode but the brightness stays the same and the P4G profile will not change from high performance to Battery saving mode.  Even i change the profile to battery saving mode manually, the brightness still stays the same.

    Thx for any suggestions.Smile [:)]

I think I have the same, but as I do not want the brightness to go down when in battery mode I do not mind :)

I actually installed P4G the get the brightness to 100% because Vista kept dimming when in battery mode and I could not find any way of preventing that.

Same hear. changing the Power4gear profile does not change the associated brightness setting, but I prefer this as I often prefer my brightness to be custom to the lighting conditions of the place I am working however I like to up or reduce CPU power dependant on what I am working on

I junked P4G as it seemed to hog a huge amount of system resources...

Mine's running quite sweetly at the moment without it.

Since my Wireless sometimes isn't restored after sleep/Lock I've created following script (it will restart the device):

    @echo off
    rem Disable Wireless

    devcon disable "USB\..."

    rem Wait for it

    @ping 127.0.0.1 -n 10 -w 1000> nul

    Rem Enable Wireless

    devcon enable "USB\..."

You can find the devcon utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272

"USB\..." should be replaced with your Hardware ID of the wireless controller, you can find this in device manager, properties of the networkcard and then advanced.

I you lose pen input from time to time, just use this script with the hardware id of the pen input device.
